Lavaun Hoppman Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ratterman Brothers Funeral Home - East Louisville on Sep. 19, 2025.

Publish in a newspaper

Lavaun Jenkins Hoppman (91) passed peacefully, in her Louisville home, on Sept. 17, 2025, with her daughter, Barbara, and sister, Patti, at her side. She was born in Glendale, Sept 27, 1933, the second child of Martha and Clyde Jenkins. Her surviving siblings are Patricia, Henry and her older brother Clyde. Three siblings, James, Carol Jo and Francis predeceased her. Her husband, August Hoppman, an Air Force veteran, passed in 1983, while residing in Las Vegas.

Lavaun was a proud graduate of Valley High School, class of 1951. She met with her classmates for many of their monthly luncheons until shortly before her death. The continuing bond of friends remains an inspiration to all.

Her 37-year marriage was filled with travel to; Virginia, Wyoming, Alabama, Taiwan and Florida. The couple travelled the western states during the 70's and 80's until settling in Las Vegas for a time. The latter half of her life was spent in Louisville, when she wasn't wintering in Florida.

Mother enjoyed thrift shopping, education, music, fishing and some light gambling. But her favorite activity was simply being with her family through the good times and the worst of times. She cared for her husband, her bother Jim and finally her mother until their passing, showing a rare kind of commitment and strength. Known for her frugality on a personal level, she was generous with family, friends and too many charities to count.

Her many careers included clerical work for the Courier Journal just after High School. Various jobs at military bases that changed with her husband's assignments. She worked at Honeywell in Florida for 15 years, on such projects as Gemini, Apollo and Space Shuttle. After returning to Kentucky in 1985, she became a realtor. Her last career change was with the Jefferson County Health Dept. And, of course her primary job was being there for her parents, siblings, daughter, nieces and nephews,

Despite her fragile appearance, Lavaun Hoppman packed a lot of strength, wisdom, will and zest for life into her tiny frame.

Services will be at Ratterman's, east. Visitation will be Friday, Sept 26, from 2 to 8PM. With visitation on Sept 27, from 12 to 4PM with services to begin at 4PM.
