LaVon Walker

LaVon (Chickadonz) Walker, 80, a native of the Dennis area, died at 4:48 p.m., Thursday, May 16, 2024 at the San Gabriel Valley Medical Center in San Gabriel, CA. Her home was in San Gabriel.
She was born August 27, 1943, to Leo and Vinetta (Brown) Chickadonz on their farm near Galesburg. She grew up in Dennis and attended the Dennis Grade School. In 1961 she graduated from Labette County Community High School at Altamont. In her school years she was active as a softball player.
Following high school she was employed three years at the First National Bank in Parsons. She attended Kansas State Teacher's College at Emporia and graduated in 1968. In 1969 she began a 30 year teaching career at Roosevelt High School in east Los Angeles, CA. She also earned a master's degree from California State University at Los Angeles.
LaVon was a member of the Alhambra United Methodist Church in Alhambra, CA.
On July 13, 1974 she and Larry D. Walker were married in her home church, the Dennis United Methodist Church. He survives of the home in San Gabriel.
Other survivors are her sister, Judy Thompson and her husband Roy, of Parsons; two nieces, Brenda Risner and her husband Jeff, of Kansas City, MO and Rebecca Thompson of Shawnee; a nephew, CMDR Bradley Thompson and his wife Kelly, of Meridian, MS; and nine great nephews and nieces.
The funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, May 26, 2024 at the Dennis United Methodist Church with Pat McReynolds officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, near Dennis.
