Dr. Lawrence D. Bourgard passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior on the morning of Wednesday, July 27, at his home on Hampton Lake, under the loving care of GHC Hospice.
Larry was born on December 2, 1942, in Amityville, NY, where he excelled in his studies at Amityville Memorial High School and was on the varsity basketball, football and baseball teams. He earned his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering at Georgia Tech, spending summers working at Grumman Aircraft on Long Island. Larry graduated from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta and returned home to NY to begin a surgical internship at Roosevelt Hospital where he met his wife, Kathy, who was a nurse there. They were married on July 1, 1972 and just celebrated their 50th anniversary earlier this month. He activated his ROTC commission and enlisted in the USAF and was assigned as a surgeon at Warren AFB, Cheyenne, WY. After his tour was completed, Larry was accepted into the orthopedic residency program at UNC-Chapel Hill and became the skilled diagnostician and surgeon that he was for many years. He was in practice in Virginia Beach and Baltimore. He and Kathy retired and moved to Bluffton in 2013.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Denise Bourgard and a brother, Ron. He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy, and his loving sons, Ryan Bourgard of Burbank, CA and Gregory Bourgard of Bluffton, and his devoted daughter-in-law Leandra Bourgard, Ryan's wife.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 21, 2022 from 4:00 pm-5:00 pm at Sauls Funeral Home, 90 Simmonsville Rd, Bluffton and a Service of Remembrance will follow from 5:00-6:00 pm. On Monday, August 22, a committal service will take place at 1pm at the Beaufort National Cemetery with military honors. Both services will be livestreamed using a link below.
