Leathie B. "Effie" Mathis, 83, passed away on Monday, November 10, 2025, in Live Oak, Florida. She was born in Gainesville, Florida, to Alexander and Romie Reed and was the youngest of seven children.

Leathie found her greatest joy in time spent with her family and her beloved dog, Louie, along with her cherished grand dogs, Luna and Trudie. A devoted NASCAR enthusiast, she delighted in every race, often cheering on the drivers she affectionately said were "hauling tater." She also loved to bake, filling her home with the warmth and sweetness of homemade treats lovingly shared with family and friends.

Known for her warmth, humor, and generosity, Leathie was a wonderful mother and a larger-than-life presence within her family.

She is survived by her loving children, Diane Gist, and Denise and Samuel Wetherington; and her treasured grandchildren, Scott Montague, Stephanie Maxwell (Blake), Meagan Vaughan (James), and Lindsey James, each of whom held a special place in her heart. Her love and legacy continue through five generations of family - including her great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren - whom she loved beyond measure and spoke of often with immense pride and joy.

She is also survived by her sister, Bertie Sheffield, with whom she shared a lifelong, unbreakable bond filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. In addition, she leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews who adored her dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Romie and Alexander Reed; and her siblings Jeanneth Vonesh, Gilbert "Bud" Reed, Lois Luke, Cecil Hall, and Wilbur Hall.

Services will be held at Harry T. Reid Funeral Home. The viewing will take place on Thursday, November 13, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and the funeral service will be on Friday, November 14, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., with interment following at Evergreen Cemetery.
