Lee Calvin Buckley was born September 15, 1953, to Lee Hazel Carter and Lula Mae Buckley. He grew up in North Memphis, in the Scutterfield neighborhood and attended Caldwell and Grant Elementary schools and graduated from Manassas High School. Lee was always smart, an honor student, highly valuing education and seeking advancement and a better quality of life. After graduating from Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin, he went on to earn a law degree from the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). Lee was passionate about practicing law, working as a public defender and with other private practitioners before opening his own practice. Lee also ran for Marion County Judge in 2000. He was well known and respected by his colleagues, particularly at the Marion County City-County Building. Lee was devoted to his Masonic Lodge serving two years as Lodge Master (1995-1997). He was awarded recognition for his excellent commitment and service to Central Lodge #1. He loved attending meetings, conventions and various lodge functions. After his Parkinson’s diagnosis, he enjoyed regular participation at Rock Steady Boxing to fight back. He also participated in Parkinson’s research studies.

Lee entered into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ at an early age and was baptized while attending Christian Springs Church. He attended Mount Vernon Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Netters during his young adult years. Lee has been a faithful and devoted member of Caring Place (formerly Calvary Temple Assembly of God) since moving to Indianapolis, IN more than 30 years ago; currently serving under Pastor, Dr. Jon Susa. Lee served as lay pastor for small group in home bible study and fellowship, the Men’s Ministry and the Care Team Ministry. He loved volunteering for special events at church, his favorites being the annual Thanksgiving food giveaway and the Christmas Store. Lee’s spiritual growth was nourished and enhanced by his memorable experience at the Indianapolis Great Banquet Retreat.

Lee departed this life on December 23, 2023. He was preceded in death by his Father, Lee Hazel Carter, Mother, Lula Mae Carter, Brothers Rufus and John Allen Buckley, and Sister Amanda Faye Buckley. Surviving siblings mourning their brother’s passing include: Ann (Rufus) Finley, Doris Ruffin, Vanessa Beard, Gwen Smith, Myra Carter and Valeria Buckley. Lee leaves a host of nephews and nieces who fondly recognized him as “Uncle Lee Calvin.”
