Charles Lenn Jamerson passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by family, on August 19, 2025. He was born on March 12, 1945, at his grandmother's home in Carmi, Illinois, while his father was serving in Germany during World War II. He was the first of three children born to Vergene and Earl Jamerson.
Lenn graduated from Crossville High School in 1963. He earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Murray State University, completing his education there in 1969. In March 1969, while at MSU, "Bear" was introduced to Mary Stivers by mutual friends. They married just six months later, on September 13, 1969, and remained lovingly committed to each other for nearly 56 years.
Lenn began his career in education at Lola Elementary in Smithland, Kentucky, where he taught 7th–8th grade and served as lead teacher. In 1970, Lenn and Mary moved to Lawrence County, Illinois, where they put down roots, raised their family, and built lasting careers as educators. While teaching at BGS, he attended Eastern Illinois University and earned his principal's license. He went on to teach and serve as principal at his beloved Seed School and later at Bridgeport Grade School. Affectionately known as "Mr. Jay," he worked in the Red Hill School District for over thirty years and was beloved by students, staff, and families alike for his firm yet gentle leadership, sharp mind, and kindness.
An avid outdoorsman, Lenn especially loved golfing and bass fishing. He participated in amateur bass tournaments throughout the South-particularly at Kentucky and Barkley Lakes-and treasured annual fishing trips to Canada with close friends. He was also a devoted fan of the Murray State Racers, Red Hill Salukis, and Chicago Cubs; he loved to "Fly the W" after every Cubs win.
Lenn was an active and valued member of his community: a lifetime member of Elks BPOE Lodge #12, where he especially enjoyed Thursday night card games; a 50-year member of the Lawrence County Country Club; and a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). His college nickname, "Bear," was a testament to his strong yet warm presence.
Lenn is survived by his loving wife, Mary; his children, Charles "Chip" Lenn Jamerson Jr. and wife Patti, of Colfax, IL, and Barbie Beckham of Evansville, IN. "Poppy's" legacy lives on through his five treasured granddaughters: Josie and Lucy Jamerson, and Mary Beth, Katie Lenn, and Beatrice Anne Beckham, and their father, Malachi. He is also survived by his sister Betty (John), his brother Don, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Vergene Gettings and Earl Jamerson.
Lenn's legacy of love, leadership, and laughter will continue through the many lives he touched as a father, husband, educator, and friend.
The family would like to extend a special thank-you to Good Samaritan Hospice and to Dr. Victor Kirchoff and staff for their excellent care during Lenn's final days.
A Memorial Service will be held at the First Christian Church of Lawrenceville on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 11:30 am. The family requests everyone join them at Coco's directly after the service for an appetizer luncheon and celebration of life.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Lawrenceville First Christian Church or Good Samaritan Hospice of Vincennes. Online condolence can be sent to the family at www.cunninghamfuneralhomes.com.
