Leo Elmer Schwartz, a beacon of joy and a pillar of strength, departed from this world on July 20, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and enduring friendships. Born in the heart of
Austin, Texas, on June 26, 1935, Leo's journey was marked by an unwavering commitment to his family, his faith, and his community. His final days were spent in
Kyle, Texas, surrounded by the love and warmth of his family.
Leo's life was a testament to the power of dedication and hard work. After graduating from Austin High School, class of '53, he honed his skills as a bookbinder, an artisanal craft that he not only mastered but also cherished. His meticulous work supported the Texas Legislature, ensuring that the notes, documents, and publications for both special and regular sessions were bound with precision and care. This quiet yet impactful contribution to the state's history will remain a part of Texas' legislative fabric for generations to come.
At the core of Leo's world were his beloved family members, who thrived on his love and guidance. He is survived by his devoted children, Dana Jo Lear and her husband Bill, Dustin Leo Schwartz and his wife Sheila, and Shelly Lee McCormick and her husband Bob. Leo's legacy continued through his cherished grandchildren, Lacey, Larissa, Brandon, Samantha, and young Leo, as well as his great-grandchildren, Cami, Hailey, Melody, Aubrey, Luke, Callum, Caleb, and Melanie, all of whom were the apples of his eye. His siblings, Laverne McClendon, Lloyd Schwartz and his wife Shirley, shared in the joys and sorrows of life's journey with him. Leo's life was built upon the solid foundation laid by his parents, Otto Elmer and Lorene (Johnson) Schwartz. Though he was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 64 years, Nelda Lee (Wagner) Schwartz, on November, 28th, 2021, his sister Helen (Schwartz) Anderson and brother-in-law Ralph McClendon, the values and love they shared and instilled in him lived on.
Leo's Christian faith illuminated his path and provided solace and strength throughout his life. His love for life's simple pleasures-a good match play of bowling, a vigorous game of softball, the strategy of square dancing, or the patience required for fishing and hunting-revealed his appreciation for the world's abundant beauty. Leo's passion for sports was not limited to participation; he also took great joy in watching baseball and football, cheering on his favorite teams from the comfort of his home. His evenings were often spent in the company of John Wayne, as he indulged in the timeless tales of Western films.
An avid woodworker, Leo's hands were rarely still. He crafted stools for each of his grandchildren, embedding each piece with love and a sense of history. These tangible expressions of his affection are cherished heirlooms that continue to support and uplift his family, both literally and figuratively.
Those who knew Leo would describe him as loving, funny, and friendly-a man who could light up a room with his humor and warmth. His was a life that inspired others to embrace each day with a smile, to find joy in the mundane, and to extend a hand of friendship wherever it was needed.
Today, we celebrate Leo Elmer Schwartz for the extraordinary man he was. His life, a beautiful mosaic of moments and memories, continues to motivate us to live with purpose, to cherish our loved ones, and to leave a mark on this world that is as unique and indelible as his own. Leo's story does not end here; it lives on in the hearts of those he touched, in the laughter that echoes in the walls of his home, and in the legacy of kindness he has left behind. Rest in peace, dear Leo, until we meet again.
