Leo (Skip) White Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 29, 2025.
Skip was born to Leo H White Sr and Lida Mae White and raised in Austin Texas. They preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Teresa J White, daughter Cheryl Dempsey of Austin, daughter Cynthia (Ben) Hadden, granddaughter Blakeney (Thomas) Hartka and great granddaughter Lydia Lorraine, Chandler, (fiancé Chris ) and Ashton Hadden, Teresa's sister Suzanne and daughter Corinne (Cade) Hennessee, children Declan, Hannah and Molly, first cousins Freddy and Aubrey Lynne McFarren, Mary A. and Bobby Whilden, as well as many other beloved first and second cousins and their children - a wonderful happy family.

Skip lived his life to spread joy and share the importance of love and laughter with family and friends, and was a gifted storyteller! He was a talented athlete in baseball, football, but golf was the game he loved most and played every chance he had. He lived on or near a golf course his entire life and rarely missed a chance to play all over the US. He was a scratch golfer for many years.

He attended the University of Texas at Austin and bled orange. After college he joined the Army (at their request) and was a part of the Special Services where he played trumpet in the Army Band and performed taps at military funerals all over the nation during the Vietnam conflict.

He worked some unique summer jobs during college. First, he and Jim Hardy sandblasted the inside of Oil Storage tanks in West Texas to remove tar residue-no one could believe he worked that hard but he did. He also spent a summer breaking horses for "Happy Jack" Shahan at his ranch in Bracketville, Texas.

He made it a priority to attend football games via season tickets, basketball and baseball games as often as he could, and he and Teresa were Life Members of the Texas Exes.

He was offered a career in law, and the military, but he found his niche in sales. He discovered he was a natural. He began with a job for Sweda, as a Sales Manager and Trainer, was promoted to District Manager, then to developing major accounts nationally; Sweda was computerizing their cash registers which set him on a path in the early evolution of computing and related technologies, That led him to a job with Nashua marketing computer products for main frame systems to major Oil and Gas companies, Banks, various State governments, Army and Air Force Exchange systems, and national paper companies. Next, he sought challenges with TEC America establishing and building out a national dealer network to market their digital cash register systems to include developing barcodes, scanners and "firmware" that permits the hardware to run multiple peripherals at a time-today called "point of sale systems". Because of his broad technology expertise and sales ability he was added to a team at Southwest Technical Products Corp, formed by an engineer from Datapoint and a pioneer in miniaturizing technology systems, having developed the first mini-computer, which was sold in kit form through Popular Science, long before Apple computer. The systems were sold to school systems, convenience store chains, fast food chains, and military divisions.

He met Teresa in 1992, and both agreed it was love at first sight. They were blessed with 32 years together sharing joy, hospitality and fellowship.

The family would like to thank all the nurses at Just Like Home, and Suncrest Hospice. Their tender love and care were amazing.

A Celebration of Life will be held March 22, 2025 at Oak Hills Country Club, 5403 Fredericksburg Road, San Antonio, Texas, 78229 from 2 to 5 pm. In lieu of flowers, you may consider a donation in his name to the Lewy Body Dementia Association, Inc, 912 Killian Hill Road SW, Lilburn, GA 30047.

Skipper was a man that lived a full and happy life. Our friendship began in 1962 at The University of Texas and continued through his passing. Amazing recall of events and personal stories.
Married to Teresa was the best decision of his life. They were a perfect match.

Skip was a joy to know and a wonderful addition to our pantheon of friends for the past almost 15 years. We will always remember our chance encounters at Aldo´s on Fredericksburg Rd. His ready smile, optimism and entertaining storytelling will be missed by many. Rest in peace, Skip. Sincere condolences on your loss, Teresa.
