Leonard M. Lay Jr., 83, of Harleysville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 10th, 2024. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Leonard and Doris (Miller) Lay Sr. He was the former husband of the late Betsey Connelly Davis & Joanne Toole. Leonard was a graduate of Souderton High School. As a young man, he traveled the country as a dog handler for several top breeders. He worked for Busy Bee Contractors as an equipment operator and then for John R. Young & Co. During this time, he also worked nights farming for Abe Weller. He then worked for 20 years as the Road Master and Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator for Lower Frederick Township until his retirement. He was also in charge of the Grounds crew for the Philadelphia Folk Festival for over 20 years. He was a member of the Perkiomen Lodge of F.& A.M., #595, Red Hill. Leonard enjoyed working on antique gas engines and tractors, tinkering in his garages, cooking and bird watching. He was an avid gardener who grew and sold plants for many years. He loved his dog and especially loved spending time telling stories to his family.
Leonard is survived by his children: Lisa Mia Frey, and her husband Mark, of Ivyland; L. Fraser Lay, and his wife, Michele, of Green Lane; Scott Mitchell Lay, and his wife, Kim, of Birdsboro, and a stepdaughter, Jessica Shourds, and her husband Buggs, of Montrose, West Virginia; grandchildren: Alex, Angelina, Kevin, Kali and Logan; a sister, Virginia Rutherford; and nieces: Hope & Debbie. He was predeceased by a grandson, Derek.
