We regretfully announce the passing of Leonard "Lenny" Sylvia Jr., 78, of Wareham, who was welcomed into the kingdom of heaven surrounded by his loving family on February 17, 2023.
Lenny was born in New Bedford on July 23, 1944, and, with his wife Maureen, went on to exemplify what it meant to have a life well-lived. The always dapper-looking Lenny appreciated hard work and instilled this in his children as the owner of the Whaling Museum Super Shell Service Station on Union Street in New Bedford. Lenny then became the head of service at Executive Mitsubishi in New Bedford and hosted a local radio show, Under the Hood with Lenny Sylvia. Later, he spent over 20 years working alongside his youngest son, Danny, as the operations manager for Sylvia's on the Level Construction. Their time spent together was filled with laughter and cherished by both.
Above all, Lenny knew that enjoying himself and creating memories with his family was a must. He organized many family trips to destinations like Jamaica and Disney with his children and grandchildren. Pop Pop, as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren affectionately called him, went out of his way, much like his father before him, to create Christmases that will always stay dear to his family. He took joy in their reactions to the many lights, blow-up decorations, and trees he carefully picked out alongside his daughter, Carrie. Lenny also adored spending time at The Rose Point Cafe with the twins--Tracey and Tammy. He looked forward to his weekly "rumble" for the Rummikub Cup and playing cards with Paula Lombard.
Lenny is predeceased by his beloved eldest son, Michael Sylvia; father, Leonard Sylvia Sr.; mother, Elvira Sylvia; sisters: Mary Pacheco and Theresa Poirier. Lenny is survived by his loving wife, Maureen, and his four children and their spouses: Tracey and Michael Sylvia, Tammy and Gary Blanchard, Daniel and Tammy Sylvia, Carrie and Michael Hynes; his nine grandchildren and their spouses: Aaron Sylvia, Heather and Joshua Souza, Adam Sylvia, Brittany and Casey Brett, Paige Blanchard, Madison Blanchard, Megan and Ryan Olsak, Kevin and LK Hynes, and Caitlin Hynes; great-grandchildren: Kyla Sylvia, Makenzie Sylvia, Myleigh Sylvia, Aubreigh Sylvia, Aaron Sylvia Jr. (AJ), Harper Souza, Kaelyn Brett, Braden Brett, Paxton Murphy, and Nova Olsak; his grand-pup Trooper; his close friend and family member, Paula Lombard, along with many other friends and extended family members.
Lenny will be forever loved and remembered for his love of family and faith in God.
Visiting hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at Chapman Funerals & Cremations – WAREHAM, 2599 Cranberry Hwy., Wareham. His funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 22 at the funeral home.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), St. Jude's, or the Tunnel to Towers Foundation

Before I started writing this, I saw the boxes below asking how I know Lenny. Although we were close friends, the term "friend" really doesn't describe how our relationship was. So, when you see that I've checked "family", that's how my family and I consider Lenny, even though we weren't blood relatives. Mary and I have know Lenny, Maureen, and the kids for over 40 years, and all the kids were just one big family when we were together. We watched our kids grow up to be great adults, and I know how proud Lenny and Maureen are of them, as are we. When I think about Lenny, which is often, I remember all the family trips we took the kids on, and just how much fun they were. Lenny's smile was infectious, and when you were around him you couldn't help but smile. I can still see him and Maureen doing their signature dances, him dancing with my mother and the look on their faces, him telling everyone how much he loved them after a few to many drinks and nodding off in between sentences, and all the great family party's at his home that we were part of, and so many other memories of when we were together. We treated each other like family because we loved each other like family. Mary and I can honestly say that we love Lenny, Maureen, Michael, Tammy, Tracy,Danny and Carrie like our own. Lenny and Maureen brought us together, and for that we are forever grateful. Whenever we think of you it will always put a smile on our faces.
See you later, Len
