On Friday, October 3, 2025, the beloved spirit of Leroy "Leroi" Hawkins, Sr., an uncle, cousin, and a grandfather, was called to a peaceful rest from all sickness and pain that this world brings to be at peace eternally with Almighty God.
Leroy was born to the union of Clarence and Rosie Lee Hawkins on August 24, 1952, in Chicago, Illinois. The family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada after a short stay in Las Vegas, the family moved to Los Angeles, California. Leroy accepted Christ Jesus at an early age where he was a member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church under the late Bishop Reverend L. C. Brown. In church is where Leroy loved to play the saxophone and the piano.
Leroy attended Brett Hart Junior High School and later graduated from Washington High School in Los Angeles, California. Leroy relocated to Wilmington, Delaware with his family, whom he loved very much.
Leroy was a certified master welder in Elkton, Maryland for 10 years. This was career that he really enjoyed. Leroy was a special person who was loved by many and is best described as "speaking his mind" and if he was misunderstood, he knew how to apologize.
It is a fact that life is uncertain. Two facts must claim our attention: (1) "The uncertainty of life and (2) The certainty of the nearness of death is inevitable. We are born to die.
Leroy loved watching cartoons with his favorite great nephew, Kase. He also loved eating candy and taking all his great nieces and nephews to the park. Leroi loved music. Music was his soul, Leroi loved playing the piano and saxophone. His passion and love were his saxophone, and he loved playing for the Lord.
Naturally our hearts are filled with sorrow because he is no longer on this earth, and with those who loved him so much. He will be missed dearly, so let us lift up holy hands and shout "Hallelujah" because Leroi has made it home.
Leroy was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Hawkins and mother, Rosie Lee Hawkins. Three sisters who preceded him in death: Carolyn Hawkins, Valerie Hawkins, and Deborah Mayhan. Two brothers, John Bachelor and Bennie Hawkins. Leroi leaves to mourn his passing two granddaughters, whom he loved dearly, Yolanda "Yo-Yo" Hawkins and Tamara "Moshie" Taylor ", both of Los Angeles, CA. A special daughter, Alisha Barker, Palm Dale, CA; three special nieces: Bridget Bachelor, Carson, CA, Gwendolyn Hawkins, Wilmington, DE, and Rosalind Hawkins-Hopkins (Therman), Millsboro, DE; One special nephew, Brian Hawkins, Los Angeles, CA. He loved all his nieces and nephews the same"they were all special to him". He was very fond of his niece, Nish Hawkins, whom he said was "special and grateful to her"because he lived with her and she helped him with getting established and in his own place of residence.
Uncle Leroi was always happy to be around his family and carried his saxophone everywhere he went and to family functions.
