Obituary — Leslie Lawrence “Larry” McCarty Leslie Lawrence “Larry” McCarty, age 89, of Windsor, Colorado, passed away on October 10, 2025, in Windsor, Colorado.
Larry was born on June 4, 1936, in Greeley, Colorado to Leslie and Evelyn McCarty.
Larry attended school in Galeton, Colorado, graduating from Galeton High School in 1952 as Valedictorian of his class when he was 16 years old. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in industrial arts from Colorado State College of Education, now known as the University of Northern Colorado in 1958.
Larry married Mary Eleanor “Ellie” Thomson on June 13, 1959 in Raton, New Mexico. Together they shared 47 years of marriage and raised 2 children: Carol (Donnie) Schell and Craig (Devon) McCarty.
After graduation Larry & Ellie began their teaching careers in Eugene, OR. They taught there for 3 years before moving to Haxtun where Larry taught industrial arts for 33 years as well as serving as a guidance counselor at Haxtun High School. He and Ellie were both beloved teachers in Haxtun and retired in 1994, shortly thereafter moved to Windsor, CO.
Larry was a member of the United Methodist Church of Windsor and Haxtun. While a member of both churches he served on numerous committees, most notably singing in the church choirs for over 50 years. He was also a member of the Sterling Elks Club, Relay For Life, was an active member of HEA, served on the Uniserve board, and sang in the Windsor Community Choir. He was a founding member of the F & H Golf Club & was an integral part of the golf club for many years.
Larry had numerous interests & hobbies. He enjoyed woodworking & is most known for his Christmas ornaments that decorate the Christmas trees of friends & family far and wide. He enjoyed singing in the church choir & quartets, was a voracious reader, crossword puzzle aficionado, loved playing cards, including bridge, poker, pinochle, hand and foot, cribbage & pitch, golf, gardening, and square dancing. He loved his CO sport’s teams including the Denver Broncos & CO Rockies & attended Rockies games for many years.
Larry is survived by his children Carol (Donnie) Schell and Craig (Devon) McCarty. He will be sadly missed by 7 grandchildren: Kendra (Travis) Campbell, Kaylee Schell, Kenneth Schell, Kassie Schell, Kaden Schell, Kyle McCarty and Brianna McCarty, step grandchildren Jack and Maggie Patterson, and 3 great-grandchildren, Rhett, Remi and Lainey Campbell. He is also survived by brother-in-law Dallas Williams, sister-in-law Marvel Thomson, 5 nephews and nieces Bruce (Debbie) Williams, Lynne (Erik) Roseen, Mark (Karen) Thomson, Larry Thomson and Beverly Sanchez.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ellie, parents Les & Evelyn McCarty, sister JoAnn Williams and brother-in-law Frank Thomson.
Celebration of life will be October 30 at 10:00 am at the Windsor United Methodist Church, 503 Walnut St, Windsor, CO 80550 with a reception to follow. Arrangements are through Mark’s Funeral & Cremation. He will be laid to rest at the Eaton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the Clearview Library District or the Clearview Library Foundation and Friends, both of which support the vital work of the library.
