Lewis Grant Read Jr.

The loving Patriarch of our family, Lewis Grant Read Jr. (Bud), completed his earthly mission and returned to his heavenly home on December 7, 2021, 1 month before his 90th birthday.

Bud was born on January 7, 1932, in Ogden, Utah, the 2nd child and oldest son of Lewis Grant Read and Thelma Leona DeYoung. He attended Weber County High School, Weber State College, and graduated from the University of Utah in mechanical engineering.

After graduating, he worked for the Marquardt Corporation in California. It was from the Granada Hills Ward in California, at the age of 25, that he received, by telegraph, a call to serve in the Netherlands Mission. Following his faithful service, he returned to Utah and worked for Marquardt, Hercules, and Hill Air Force Base, retiring in 2004.

In 1959 Bud met Virginia on a blind date. They courted and were married August 11, 1960, in the Salt Lake Temple.

Bud was blessed with a brilliant mind. He was a great handyman and could fix anything, especially cars. He loved his home and working in his yard. He developed a great love for the Scouting program and was honored with the prestigious Silver Beaver Award. He spent many years as a Scout Master, influencing many young men to earn their Eagle Scout Awards. He was especially proud that his 5 sons and 13 grandsons all earned their Eagle Scout Awards. He loved the outdoors and taught his boys to love it. They spent many summers hiking and fishing on their annual Uinta Mountain trips. Later his grandchildren would join in hiking and fishing trips.

Bud loved his family. He was so proud of his 5 boys, 13 grandsons and 7 granddaughters, and loved being with them on family outings and holidays. He enjoyed watching and coaching their sporting events.

Bud was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and Virginia lived in the Kaysville 10th Ward for over 54 years and made many lasting friendships. Much of his life was spent serving in his church callings and faithfully ministering to others. He was a humble man of few words but was a diligent example of service to his sons.

In addition to his mission in the Netherlands, Lewis and Virginia were service missionaries at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, and full-time missionaries in the Philippines Angeles Mission and Australia Sydney South Mission. These were life-changing experiences for them, the people they served and their family. He also served as an ordinance worker in the Bountiful temple.

Bud is survived by his wife Virginia and his children: Scott (Desari), Chris (Peggy), Richard (Diane), David (Emily), Stephen (Julie); 20 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; and his sister Karen (Dale) Johnston. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Dolores (Don) Kimbal, and brother William Read.

Bud will be missed so much by family and friends. His hands worked hard and his heart loved many. His family thanks the Applegate Hospice nurses and aides who cared for him. Their service in his final days was heaven sent.

A viewing will be on Monday, December 13, 2021 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Russon Mortuary and Crematory, 1941 North Main Street, Farmington, Utah. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at 12:00 PM at the Kaysville 10th Ward Chapel, 1039 Crestwood Road, Kaysville, Utah, with a viewing prior to the services from 10:45-11:45 AM.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to be made to the Humanitarian Fund or Missionary Fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
