Lewis Weeber Obituary

Lewis (Lew) J. Weeber died at age 84 in Fremont, MI on October 18, 2023 after an extended illness.
A graduate of Calvin University and Michigan State University, he earned bachelor's and master's degrees in social work in 1963. After graduating, he joined the Peace Corp in Nigeria where he met whom he said were the happiest people he knew. Lew then married his Michigan State sweetheart Genevieve M. Smith in 1965 in Kamakwie, Sierre Leone, West Africa where he taught science and math in a Wesleyan mission secondary school.
He spent his career as a family counselor with Bethany Christian Services, working in mental health and nursing home positions. Lew was active in church ministries, leading adult Bible studies and serving on church and school administrative boards. He served as a camp counselor at Camp Blodgett for orphaned children during college summer breaks. As a teenager, Lew enjoyed a two-week, 850-mile bike adventure with a friend - even sleeping in a jail one night to avoid bad weather!
Born on June 10, 1939 in Grand Rapids, MI, the son of Thomas and Alice Weeber, he is survived by his beloved wife, Genevieve, sons Stephen and Philip, daughters-in-law Marcie and Carter, and grandchildren, Emma, Alex, Austin, Genna, and Lucy, and sisters Mary Van Dyke and Carol Weller. He is preceded in death by his sisters Shirley Rose, Louise Kroes, his brother Thomas Weeber and nephew, Tommy Weeber.
A celebration of life will be held on November 4, 2023 at 3:00pm at Reeman CRC, 6121 S. Fitzgerald Ave, with Pastor Les Van Dyke officiating.

Lew was always soft-spoken and kind. I worked with him at Bethany Christian Services and enjoyed both he and his wife as we attended the same church. He made a cassette tape of Winnie The Pooh stories for our (then) children and it was so beloved, they wore out the tape! I work at the Fremont Library and he was a frequent patron. He will be missed.
