Lex Newman Moore, 78, passed away on October 29, 2024, at his home in Vero Beach, FL. He was born on February 23, 1946, in Memphis, TN to Lemuel Lex Moore and Mary Helen Shappley Moore. He was the youngest of two children. His older brother, Robert "Bob" Moore, was his closest friend in his later years. The family moved to Hamilton, AL in 1951 to start Toll-Gate Garment Company. Lex graduated from Hamilton High School in 1964 and studied business at Freed Hardemen University.
Lex married his high school sweetheart, Janet Lundy, on September 10, 1965, in Hamilton, AL. They had three children, Pascha Moore Kelley, Tracy Moore, and Slate Moore. Later, Lex was blessed with two beloved daughters-in-law, Melissa Webster Moore (Tracy) and Julie Fears Moore (Slate). Lex is survived by ten grandchildren: Lex Moore, II (wife: Jessica Moore), Noah Moore, Madeline Salathe Langcuster (husband: Jackson Langcuster), Lena Moore Reynolds (husband: Luke Reynolds), Jacob Salathe, Micah Moore (wife: Mollie Moore), Leisel Moore Cogswell (husband: Jadin Cogswell), Charleston Moore, Bella Moore, and Shepherd Moore. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren: Ryder Reynolds, Piper Moore, Atlas Cogswell, Jackson Langcuster, Jr., and August Moore.
Lex entered the US Army in 1966, serving proudly during Vietnam, stationed mainly in Bad Tölz, Germany. He and Janet enjoyed living abroad and traveling through Europe. After the military, he returned to Hamilton to work in the family business, Toll Gate Garment Company. This business was successful for over 50 years and a major employer in Hamilton. Lex loved his employees, and they loved him. Lex and his brother, Bob, eventually took over the business from their father. After NAFTA was passed, the company could not compete with foreign competition. Like many other manufacturing companies across the US, Toll Gate had to close its doors.
After this, Lex worked for several other companies in sales and management positions. He moved to Foley, AL during this time and remained there for 20 years. Lex retired from the Marriott Grand Hotel in Fairhope, AL in 2020. Then, Lex and Janet moved to Vero Beach, FL to be close to their sons and their families. His daughter moved to Vero Beach soon after, and the family was once again together. Lex loved his family and spent the last several years surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He also loved animals, and his dogs and granddogs were considered part of the family.
Lex was predeceased by his parents Lemuel and Mary Helen Moore; and his grandson, Gabriel Moore, son of Slate and Julie Moore. He is survived by his brother Bob Moore of Hamilton, AL; his wife, Janet Moore, who he was married to for 59 years; and all their children.
Lex was a deeply beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He loved sports, especially the Alabama Crimson Tide. Lex was an excellent golfer and softball player in his younger years. He also enjoyed songleading, woodworking, flower gardening, drawing, and was an all-around handyman.
In addition to family, Lex loved the Lord and served Him faithfully. He was the songleader and deacon at the Hamilton Church of Christ for 30 years. Musically gifted, Lex was part of a gospel singing group, The Revealers Quartet. Lex was involved in the beginning stages of Maywood Christian Camp and continued to contribute to its success for many years. He was a member of the Robertsdale Church of Christ where his son, Slate, was minister. Lex later served as a deacon at the Gulf Shores Church of Christ. During the final four years of his life, he enjoyed being a member of the Vero Beach Church of Christ where his son, Tracy, is the minister. His granddaughter Charleston also serves as a missionary in Africa, and he was very proud of her.
Lex was a community leader and very involved in civic affairs in his hometown, Hamilton, AL. He served as president of the Hamilton CJ's and the Hamilton Parks and Recreation Board. Lex was on the Board at Northwest Alabama Medical Center in Hamilton, SouthTrust Bank (now Wells Fargo), and other organizations.
While we lost our most beloved husband and dad, many have lost a friend and loved one in him. He has been a rock to many, a master at humor and witty timing to others. There was so much more to him than just husband and dad, though to us that was his greatest role.
