Lillian Young, 89, loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed peacefully at her home in Camp Hill on August 20th, surrounded by her children and grandchildren.
She was born in Carbondale PA to Alexander and Eva Artim. She met the love of her life Joe Yakowenko, at her parents' home while he was selling Christmas cards door to door. As the story goes, her parents finally broke down and bought a card just to get him to leave.
Lillian was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Young (formerly Yakowenko), a pharmacist to whom she was married for 56 years The couple started married life in Cleveland OH, where Lillian gave birth to her first son, Jay. Wanting to be closer to family, they relocated to Elizabethtown, PA. Two children followed, daughter Beverly and son Thomas.
The family then moved to Manheim, PA with the purchase of the family business, Ruhl's Drug Store. Lillian's accounting background came in handy as she managed the store's finances and filled in as needed.
Joe and Lil retired to Avon Park, FL and spent many enjoyable years as retirees with frequent visits from family. After Joe's passing in 2015, Lil returned to central Pennsylvania to be closer to her kids and grandkids. In a letter written to her children and read on the day of her death, Lillian stated that raising her children was the happiest period of her life. During the last ten years of life Lillian also shared her love with her constant companion, a cat named JoJo. Earlier this year at age 89, Lillian fulfilled her lifelong desire to go on a Caribbean cruise, accompanied by her daughter Beverly and her granddaughters Bethany Graybill and Emmalee Hackney (Graybill).
Lillian's survivors include a son Jay Young, a daughter Beverly Graybill and her husband James, a son Dr. Thomas Young and his wife Mary. Her grandchildren include Shannon Graybill, Bethany Graybill, Emmalee Hackney and her husband Mitch, Alexander Young, Evan Young, and Josiah Graybill.
In her usual modest fashion, Lillian requested no memorial service. Her final resting place will be Simpson, PA buried between her husband Joseph and her beloved father Alexander.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to the
charity of one's choice.
