Obituary
Lloyd Guy Shipley
June 10, 1948 – October 18, 2025
Lloyd Guy Shipley, age 77, of
Worland, Wyoming passed away on October 18, 2025 after a long battle with chronic illness.
"Guy" was born on June 10, 1948, to James and Phyllis Shipley in the old hospital/old library on Coburn Avenue in Worland. An avid pilot, mechanic, and engineer, Guy was known for his "need for speed" and raced anything with wheels and/or wings, famously achieving many land speed records charted in history by family and friends.
Guy attended school in Cody, Greybull, and graduated from Worland High School 1966. He attended Northwest College in Powell and graduated with an AA in Engineering in 1968. Next, he enlisted in the Air Force in 1969 and served his country until his honorable discharge and returning home to Worland in 1973. On July 26, 1969, he married his sweetheart, Wanda Thiel. They lived, loved, and laughed for nearly 55 years before Wanda's passing in May of 2024.
An entrepreneur at heart, Guy worked through primary school delivering newspapers in Cody and Basin, and next driving the Washakie County School District's Gooseberry bus route in the 1960s while in high school. In the 1970s he began work as a motorcycle mechanic and moonlighted as a TV repair man, eventually beginning his 38-year career at the gas plant north of town. He advanced to plant foreman with Devon Energy before leaving the workforce in 2011.
While in the Airforce, Guy was stationed in Alamogordo, New Mexico at the Hollman Air Force Base near White Sands Missile Range. He and Wanda welcomed his two sons, Tyler and Michael while he was stationed here. The couple then moved back to Worland and soon welcomed their daughter Andrea to the family.
Guy was an avid outdoorsman, hunter, and fisherman. Often, he enjoyed the prize of "the first, the biggest, and the most," fish and was usually the first person to see a falling star during his nightly viewings of the Wyoming skylines.
A heart towards service, Guy was a member of the Elks Club for 53 years, a Boy Scout Master for 15 years, Little League baseball coach for more than 5 years, and dedicated supporter of everything his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren enjoyed. Before the end of his career, he was also appointed the chairman of Homeland Security for the City of Worland. His motto, "if you get in a jam, here I am," was not just lip service. Anytime noon or night, Guy was your man for a rescue mission and available to help.
After retirement, Guy spent his time boating, camping, fishing, tending his yard, watching birds, playing cards, and spending time with his loved ones. Guy was the ultimate grandpa or as they called him, "Pop Pop." There was very seldom a time that family and friends would not jump at the opportunity to gather around him for a hilarious story like "Rendercella" or the opportunity to play cards and just be together.
There was never a day, even as he lived with the chronic pain of Multiple Sclerosis, that Guy did not proclaim that he was so blessed that his cup runover. Guy was predeceased by his father James L. Shipley, mother Phyllis Genelle Shipley, his wife Wanda Shipley, sisters Rebecca "Becky" Shipley and Margaret "Peggy" Shipley. He is survived by his brothers, Gary Shipley, Jim Shipley and Curtis Dye, sisters Ellen Conrad, Linda Shipley, and children Tyler Shipley, Michael (Michelle) Shipley and Andrea Shipley (Drew Weston), grandchildren, Bailey (Trevor) Mitzel, Hannah Shipley, and Harper "Kit" Shipley-Weston, great grandchildren, Violit, Journey, Misa and Dexter Mitzel.
A visitation will be held at 9:30AM, Saturday, October 25, 2025, at the Bryant Funeral Home followed by a procession at 10:45 am to the cemetery for graveside services at Riverside Cemetery Memorial starting at 11:00 am with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Guy Shipley Engineering Scholarship at Northwest College Foundation at www.northwestcollegefoundation.org.
