Lois Ruth Sheffer, 84, passed away on May 2, 2023 at Deaconess Midtown Hospital. She was born January 15, 1939 in Sturgis, KY to the late Oliver and Mary Ruth (Conn) Dunning.
Lois graduated from the Ivy Tech School of Nursing, after she finished raising her three sons. She went on to work as a nurse at several urgent cares until finally retiring at the age of 70. Lois was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
She was a genuine animal lover from a young age, even raising bulldogs with her father. Family was important to her and Lois enjoyed talking to her nieces on the phone. She was especially close to her sister, Judy, and would easily spend an hour on the phone with her daily. Lois also treasured her 11:30 am lunches with her husband, Guy.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and loving dog, Jake.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 65 years, Guy Sheffer; sons, Ron Sheffer (Dee Ann), Steve Sheffer (Cheryl) and Joe Sheffer (Pasha); grandchildren, Kyle Sheffer (Nicole), Todd Sheffer and Micah Sheffer; great-grandchildren, Owen and Olivia Sheffer; sister, Judy Hatfield; brother, David Dunning; many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral service will be held at 12:00 pm Friday, May 5, 2023 at Schneider Funeral Home, 512 Main St., Mt. Vernon, IN with Pastor Tim Garrett and Pastor Kevin Petty officiating and burial to follow in Bellefontaine Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm service time on Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to NewLife Rescue and Adoption, formerly Posey Humane Society.
