Loretta was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania on August 5, 1933. She was the daughter of the late John and Catherine Posegay.
She married Victor R. Gardy on August 3, 1956. They had five children.
She was a 1954 graduate of The Sacred Heart Hospital School of Nursing in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and later received a B. A. in Human Services from Trinity College in Burlington, Vt. in 1981.
Loretta was a Nurse Manager and Assistant in Instruction in the Pediatric Department of The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland in the late 1950's. She left this position to start and raise her family of three sons and two daughters.
Loretta and her family moved to Vermont in 1968. In 1971, she was appointed Shelburne Town Health Officer, and served in that position through 1974, receiving a commendation for her work from then State Health Commissioner, Dr. Robert Aiken. In 1974, she became a Program coordinator for The Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Chittenden County, where she worked until she returned to Nursing in 1981. She was a Psychiatric Nurse at the then MCHV, now Fletcher Allen Health Care, working until her retirement in 1996.
Loretta was active in her Children's Educational communities, serving as a member, and then later as Chairman of the Rice High School Board in the late 1970's, and as Co-President with her husband, of the UVM Family Associates. After retirement, Loretta and her husband spent most of their time in Virginia, participating in the daily lives of
their grandchildren. As the Grandchildren grew older, She and her husband picked up their lives again in Vermont and spent their time in the various activities that made Vermont so special to them. Loretta spent many hours cultivating her flowers and photographing them. She also filled many albums with her photographs of her children, and beautiful grandchildren, creating a legacy of wonderful memories for them to treasure.
Loretta was predeceased by her husband, Victor, of Shelburne, VT. in 2023. She leaves behind her son David Gardy and his wife, Carolyn, of Herndon, Virginia, and their daughters, Sarah of Coventry, Rhode Island and Celeste of Manhattan, New York; Her son, Matthew Gardi, and his wife Lisa of Key West, Florida; Her daughter, Dr. Lynn David, and her husband, Dr. Vivek David of Vienna VA, and their four children, Zachary of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Steven of Tallahassee, FL, Maya and her husband Nick Masters and great grandson Ollie of Lorton, VA, and Jacob and fiancée Maddy Lock of San Diego, CA; Her daughter, Dr. Marianne Passarelli and her husband, Dr. James Passarelli, and their two daughters, Dr. Rachel Passarelli Rossi and her husband Alexander Rossi and Dr. Natalie Passerelli of Hamden, Ct. Her son, Michael, predeceased her in 1980, as did an infant grandchild, Julia Ruth Gardy in 1997. She also leaves her brother, Jack Posegay and his wife, Linda, and their children, as well as a large extended family mostly in the Pennsylvania area.
In accordance with Loretta's wishes, there will be no calling hours. A private Memorial Service will be held for family members. Internment will be in Resurrection Park Cemetery. Should friends desire, contributions in her memory may be made to: Doctors Without Borders, CRS, or the charity of their choice.
