Louis Douglas Rugg 77, of New Port Richey, Florida, formerly of Valparaiso, passed away November 25, 2024. He was born January 25, 1947 in Red Bank, New Jersey, the son of Louis and Frances (Hutton) Rugg. Doug was a US Army Vietnam Veteran and was a switchman at Inland Steel retiring in 2002. He was a former member of the Charles Pratt American Legion Post #94 and the V.F.W. Post #988 in Valparaiso. On August 26, 2004, he married Judy Hicke, who survives in New Port Richey. Also surviving are his sons, Louis "Guy" Rugg II of Winamac and Rick (Cilla) Rugg of Portage and a daughter Eleanor (Bruce) Jahr of Chesterton, step-son Eric (Kim) Hicke of Portage and step-daughter Stephanie (Randall) LaBare of New Port Richey, FL., 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Other survivors are Doug's siblings Pat (Tom Schaefer of Valparaiso, Diane Lawrence of Valparaiso, Linda Gibbs of Mishawaka, Richard (Linda) Rugg of Valparaiso, Kathy (Charlie) Robinson of Harrison, AR, and Mary (Gerald) House of Valparaiso, his good friend Chester (Deb) McKinney of Portage and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 nephews and a niece. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 7, 2025 at the Charles Pratt American Legion Post #94, 4 Monroe Street, Valparaiso, IN 46383, from 1 pm to 4 pm. There will be a Religious Service at 1:30 pm and last approximately 30 minutes. The family requests that those attending arrive before 1:30 pm or after 2:00 pm so to not interrupt this part of the service. This probably goes without saying, but blue jeans were certainly Doug's preferred attire. Just in case anyone is wondering, jeans are certainly welcome; we want everyone to be comfortable. Judy and the family hope everyone will come and share memories and stories of Doug. In lieu of flowers please donate to St. Jude's.
