"Big Luke" had 60+ years of experience in the grocery business. His career began at Booker's Grocery in Halifax, VA at the age of 14, where he started delivering groceries. Luke became store manager, president of Halifax Jaycees, member of the Halifax Volunteer Fire Department and a staff sergeant in the Virginia Air National Guard during his time in Halifax. His love for grocery business led him to Winn-Dixie, where he held several positions across NC and VA, including store manager, produce buyer and area supervisor. After this illustrious career of many years, he retired and said goodbye to his Winn-Dixie family, only to join another grocery family in Piggly Wiggly where he shared his knowledge and passion for the grocery business. His true desire was to help everyone to succeed. Luke loved sports, enjoyed playing golf and being a member of a bowling league with his wife. He loved watching UNC, Atlanta Braves and the Washington Commanders with a cigar and a glass of scotch.
Luke is survived by his wife of 63 years, Linda Spivey Phillips; his daughter, Lynn Phillips; his son, Luke Phillips and wife, Shelia; his grandchildren, Cymone Evans and Brylee Phillips; his great grandson, Carter Phillips; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A Special Gathering of Family and Friends will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2024, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 1130 N. Winstead Ave., Rocky Mount, NC 27804.
