Irl Dixon

1950 - 2025

Irl Graham Dixon, 75, of Hampstead, NC, passed away peacefully at his home on August 24, 2025. Born on February 24, 1950, he was the beloved son of the late James Leland Dixon and Olivia Irlene Dixon, and was reunited in heaven with his wife, Trudy Dixon.

A proud graduate of South Point High School's Class of 1968, Irl continued his education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His love for the Tar Heels was unmatched-he delighted in teasing friends with a boisterous "Rah Rah Carolina!" cheer!

Irl led a remarkable life of passion, service, and adventure. He made his mark in the film industry as a talented director of photography, traveling the world and capturing unforgettable moments through his lens. He later committed many years to public service on the Belmont City Council, followed by a successful career as a dedicated realtor.

But above all, Irl treasured his family. He is survived by his son, James Dixon, and daughter-in-law, Allison; his beloved granddaughters, Olivia and Billie Kay-who brought him his greatest pride and happiness; and his sister, Diane Burrell. He is also survived by several dear family members and close friends who will forever remember his warmth, humor, and generous spirit. Over the last five years, Irl lovingly helped Jimmy and Allison raise Olivia and Billie Kay, creating memories the family will always hold dear.

Irl will be remembered for his quick wit, his deep love of Carolina basketball, his commitment to family and community, and the joy he brought to everyone fortunate enough to know him.

A service to honor Irl's life will be held on September 6, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Belmont, NC. In celebration of Irl's love for the Tar Heels, the family encourages all who attend to wear Carolina Blue in his honor.
