Lucy was born on September 11, 1926, in Vermillion, Kansas to Paul and Ethel Billings. She was one of three sisters, Edna Mae and Rose Marie, and shared a close bond with them throughout her life. After graduating from Vermillion High School, she joined her sisters at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, where she worked for 26 years, this marked the beginning of a vibrant chapter filled with family, friends, and community involvement.
Following her marriage to George J. (Tony) Soptic, in 1947, they settled in Kansas City, Kansas moving to Bonner Springs in 1976, where Lucy's warm spirit and generous nature shone brightly. She became an active member of the Bonner Beautiful Commission, dedicating her time and energy to beautifying her community. She also volunteered with youth at Bonner Springs Grade School, sharing her wisdom and kindness with the next generation. Her social life thrived through her involvement with the Telephone Pioneers and the Bonner Springs Senior Citizens. A longtime member of the Bonner Springs United Methodist Church, her faith was a cornerstone of her life.
Lucy possessed an adventurous spirit, and she cherished the many travels she undertook with her longtime friend, Jo Ann. Their journeys took them to Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Panama, and across the United States, creating lasting memories and enriching her life experiences.
Lucy was predeceased by her parents and two sisters; her husband, George, in 2001; her great granddaughter Emiley Anne Gant 2004; and her daughter-in-law, Denise Soptic, in 2022.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories, survived by her three sons: John Soptic and his wife, Terri, of Lenexa, Kansas; Jim Soptic of North Kansas City, Missouri; and Greg Soptic and his wife, Sarah, of Strawberry Hill in Kansas City, Kansas. She is also survived by six grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and countless friends whose lives she touched will deeply miss Lucy's warmth, her unwavering kindness, and her dedication to family and community.

Grandma Lucy made the best cookies! I´ll always remember grabbing as many as I could on Christmas.

I met Lucy in 1979 at Southwestern Bell. I was a dumb kid working my first real job. Lucy was kind, patient, and cheerful as she became my friend and "work mom". Lucy once mentioned spending the day with several of her friends making povitiza. I thought it sounded delicious and asked her for the recipe. Lucy tried to explain that it was not a project for amateurs, but I was young, ambitious, and clueless, so I persisted. She finally relented and gave me a copy of her handwritten recipe. I don´t recall if it was the 11 cups of flour or the part about covering the entire table with a cloth that finally knocked sense into me, but I realized I was out of my depth. I never did make the povitiza, but I still have Lucy´s recipe. I last talked to Lucy 2 or 3 years ago and she still sounded like the same wise and wonderful lady I met in 1979. My deepest condolences to your family.
