Lula Elizabeth Downs

Frankfort - Lula Elizabeth Wells Downs, age 83, passed away on Wednesday, March 11, 2026. Services will be held at Harrod Brothers Funeral Home on Monday, March 23, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Scott Van Neste officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be at Harrod Brothers Funeral Home from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Monday.

Lula was born in Crab Orchard, Kentucky. Her parents, Taylor "Dick" Wells and Gladys Burkhart, have deep roots in Leslie County, Kentucky.

Lula was the kind of person who could do or figure out anything. She retired from the state after many years at the Department of Local Government. She worked a variety of jobs in retail, a short time in a factory, and as a housekeeper, and she was a meticulous housekeeper.

She enjoyed the outdoors and like the inside of her house, her yard and its flowers were something to behold. The many types and numerous colors of flowers could have been from a southern home and garden magazine. Another thing she loved very much was being the Sunday School teacher for the youngest children whose family attended her church, Bellepoint Baptist Church. She adored and doted on children so this was not just something to do for her, it was true love and enjoyment. Most of all, she loved her family, her husband Joe and three sons, John, Stevie and Tony. Her sisters and her brothers, and their children were always close to her heart.

She is survived by two sons, John Patrick and Anthony Gene "Tony" and his wife Beth. She also left two grandchildren, Matthew and Darlene as well as three great grandchildren and one great-greatgrandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Patrick; her beloved son Stevie, Steven Mitchell; and sisters, Ruth and Nola Gene.

Serving as pallbearers will be Alijah Hume, Clark Riley, Matthew Downs, Patrick Kelley, Brian Wells, Mike Hawkins, and Kyle Wells. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Wells and Kenneth Wells.

In lieu of flowers as an expression of sympathy, her son's ask that you make a memorial contribution to her church, Bellepoint Baptist Church, Kentucky Ave., Frankfort, KY.
