Luther Sulton Hayes, Jr was the first-born son of the late Luther Sulton Hayes, Sr. and Elvy M. (North) Hayes. He was born June 28, 1945, and he transitioned to his final resting place on January 31, 2025. Luke, Jr or LH as he was affectionately known to many, was born in Gilmore, Arkansas and later relocated to Columbus, Ohio, with his family. Luke, Jr. was educated through the Columbus Public School Systems and graduated from East High School. In August of 1962, he joined the United States Army and was stationed overseas. During his service, he received marksman level for 45 cal pistol and expert accommodations for a number of other types of guns. After returning home from the Army, Luke Jr. joined his father and the family business as the first black owned Mobile full-service gas station in Bexley, Ohio.
Luther's wonderful cousin, Willia (Reeves) Harvell, was responsible for introducing Luke, Jr. to his lovely wife, Frinzine Walker. Luther and Frinzine married on June 16, 1979, and he took on the role of becoming a bonus father to her daughter, Danielle. Luke Jr's proudest moment was when he became a grandfather to Danielle's son, Daniel, and earned the new title, "PaPa in the Blue Truck". From the very first time he held him; they formed a bond that can never be broken.
Throughout the years, Luther has worked at Kapac/Delorean and drove dump trucks for the City of Columbus for several years. He is the former president for the East Hampton Addition Block Watch, as well as served on the board at the Barnett Community Center. He was always participating in some community outreach programs. He was also active in church affiliations, but when it came to leisure time, he was an avid fisherman who cherished his boat. We have all heard his many many fishing stories.
Luther is preceded in death by his parents, Luther. S Hayes Sr. and Elvy M. Hayes. his siblings, Gilford B. Hayes, Rickey P. Hayes, Edward E. Hayes, Sylvia L. Hayes-Parks, Jesse M. Hayes-Betts, and Sheryl C. Hayes-Malone
Luther leaves to cherish his memory: his wife Frinzine Hayes, daughter: Danielle Boykin, grandson: Daniel Ferguson, brothers: Derek Hayes (Valerie), Charles Hayes, sisters: Elvy "Roz" Hayes, Katrina "Tina" Hayes, and generations of nieces and nephews, a host of cousins and extended family members.
