Ronald Jacob Betton, Sr., born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at the blessed age of 87. Ronald served his family, community, and his church throughout his life.
Ronald was born September 3, 1937. He received his formal education from Columbus Public Schools. After attending East High School, Ronald joined the United States Navy where he proudly served until 1990. He joined the Columbus Fire Department in 1970 and retired as a lieutenant in 1997. He was awarded a Battalion Chief's Commendation for outstanding service in 1993 and was also awarded the Distinguished Service Award for finding and removing a victim from a dangerous atmosphere; without his valiant efforts the victim would have perished. He was a member of the Minority Fire Fighters Organization and was honored with the First In award in 2019 for bravery by the Old Retired Guys and Gals Organization.
Ronald gave his life to the Lord as a young adult. He was ordained as a minister and was a long-time member of Hudson Street Church of God. He was honored for his faithfulness and dedication in teaching the New Comers New Converts Class of 2002 at Kimberly Parkway Church of God. Ronald was known as a prayer warrior and many requests regularly came in asking for his prayers and council. He enjoyed singing and was a proud member of the Basement Boys.
Ronald was an affectionate husband and father who took seriously his role as a provider. He and Marie were married February 10, 1962. Through this union, five children were born. He worked very hard – sometimes working multiple jobs – so that Marie didn't need to work outside of the home. He was dedicated to teaching his children about the Lord, requiring us to recite bible verses from memory and holding family bible studies. You could always hear him singing around the house and he joyfully joined in on our famous Betton home concerts.
Ronald was known for being competitive and won several ping pong tournaments. He played basketball recreationally for many years and loved playing chess with his friend, Brooks. He was a "die hard" Buckeye fan and was easy to find anytime the Buckeyes were on the grid-iron: in front of his television wearing a Buckeye sweatshirt, with his dancing Brutus figurine within reach.
Ronald, the fourth of five children, was preceded in death by his parents, Lula Mae and George Betton, Sr.; his brothers, Lee Betton, George Betton, Jr. and Edward Betton, Sr.; and his sister, Mary (Lawrence) Trudo.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Marie; his children, Alisa Watson, Aleta Thomas, Camille (Timothy) Williams, Ronald, Jr., and Alena (Torrance) Hampton; his half-sisters, Rochelle Betton-Ford and Meichell Betton; brothers-in-law, Ernest Williams and Herman Ed Maynus; sister-in law, Bernice Betton; his grandchildren, Iran and Isaac Watson, Donnyell Thomas, London Hampton, Ashland Williams, and Torrance Hampton, II; great-grandchildren, Malcolm Thomas, and Zara and Kenzo Watson; special nephew and nieces, Derek Trudo, Devonne Cruz, and Arminta Williams; special daughter, Jackie Davis; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members, and friends.
Ronald will be greatly missed by those who had the privilege to know and love him.
