Francis Thompson, the author of The Hound of Heaven, once said, "Look for me in the nurseries of Heaven."
This quote could well apply to Sr. Lydia and beyond that. She spent her entire professed- religious life
ministering to early childhood and elementary school children in an extraordinary way.
Sister Lydia Steele, formerly known in religious life as Sister Mary Phillip was one of a number of Sisters who
entered the Community from Most Blessed Sacrament Parish in Houghs Neck, a seashore section of Quincy,
Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Margaret M. Mahon and Phillip Steele and one of six siblings.
She earned a Bachelor's of Science Degree and a Master of Education from Bridgewater State University and a
Master of Education from Boston University.
Sister Lydia taught at Sacred Heart Elementary School in Kingston Massachusetts (1966-1970), St. Bridget in
Abington, Ma. (1970-1973), and St. Francis Xavier in Weymouth, Ma. (1973-1974). She returned to Sacred
Heart Elementary in 1974, where she excelled in many education ministries: special education (1974-1990),
Financial Administrator (1990-2013) and principal (2014-2025).
Sr. Lydia poured all her energy into every position she held in her long ministry in Catholic education. She
never allowed cancer to overcome her dedication.
She loved nature and being outdoors, be it bicycling, gardening, or zipping around the school grounds on her
tractor. And most school days she could be found standing outside in all kinds of weather greeting the children,
parents and grandparents in the morning and afternoon.
With Sr. Ann Therese, she raised the funds to build the Early Childhood Center which greatly expanded the
ministry to even younger children. She also served as Board Member of La Roche University.
Can we look for you, Sister Lydia, "in the school corridors of Heaven"?
