Lynwood Ray Johnson, 75, of Benson, passed away unexpectedly at his home on October 29,2025. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Linda Hudson Johnson; his daughters Lisa Hinson (Terry) and Tallie Johnson; and grandsons Jacob Ray Roberson and Adam Roberson.

The boys affectionately called their grandfather, Bubba. The three of them had a very strong, meaningful bond and he loved both of them immensely.

Lynwood was a 1969 graduate of Dunn High School. He worked at Erwin Mills for 30 years until it closed. Never afraid to take on a challenge, he attended Johnston Community College where he obtained an Associates Degree in Commercial Refrigeration. He worked in this field for several years traveling across the nation.

Lynwood was the youngest of 10 children born to the late Lien and Isadell Johnson. He and his siblings grew up on a farm where he learned many life skills that benefited him and his family throughout his life. Lynwood was predeceased by his brothers, Colonel A., Kermit B., Earl D., Arvie J Johnson and sisters, Helen Gray Johnson Williams, Brenda K. and Linda Faye Johnson. His surviving siblings are Kirby C. Johnson and Verna Mae Johnson Young.

Lynwood had an outgoing personality and never met a stranger. He always let you know exactly what he was thinking! He liked to joke with others to get a good laugh. He was humble, selfless, and always put the needs of others above his own. He demonstrated his love for his family through both words and deeds. He was a hard worker and instilled the importance of a strong work ethic to his daughters.

Lynwood was a cowboy who loved to watch old westerns. He shared his love of Mule Days, horses, trail riding and camping at Lumber River with his best friend of 28 years, Carroll Young, who he loved like a brother.

Lynwood loved carpentry. He used those skills to help build the two-family homes where he and Linda raised their family. Lynwood recently started a carpentry related hobby by making small replica tobacco barns as gifts and to sell. He hand-crafted 157 of these timeless treasures before he passed.

Lynwood was a large part of his community. He enjoyed fellowship with friends over a good meal and gospel/bluegrass music. He and friends would meet every morning for breakfast, whether it be with Carroll Young or the fellas at the “wisdom table” in Benson.

He had a heart of gold for animals and was known for taking in strays. He was often seen with his fur babies, Milo and Sugar, riding in the truck. He kept them by his side, whether it be running errands, doing daily tasks and even taking them camping with him. He recently took in another dog, Red, who he quickly loved.

When ending a visit, Lynwood would jokingly say, “aren’t you glad you got to see me?” Even though we won’t get to see him again, his memory and love will live forever in our hearts.

Visitation will be on Sunday, November 2, 2025, from 2:00-3:00 pm at the Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Benson.

Graveside Funeral Services will follow the visitation at Benson City Cemetery at 3:30 pm.

At other times, the family will receive visitors at the home of Terry and Lisa Hinson located at 417 Delma Grimes Road, Coats, NC.
