Mallory Scott Barber, 85, entered into the care of the Lord on Sunday, November 9, 2025. The beloved husband of the late Peggy V. Barber, Scott was a man of deep faith and generous spirit who loved his family, church, and friends wholeheartedly. His kindness and compassion touched all who knew him, leaving a lasting legacy of love and warmth.
Scott was the son of the late Mallory Palmer Barber and Allie Scott Barber. Born in Washington, D.C., he grew up in Spring Hill near Scotland Neck, North Carolina. He graduated from Scotland Neck High School in 1958 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from N.C. State College (now N.C. State University). Following graduation, Scott began his career at the paper mill in Roanoke Rapids, where he served in a variety of roles over the years. After 35 years of dedicated service, he retired in 1997 as Maintenance Superintendent from Champion International Corporation.
Scott was a devoted and active member of All Saints' Episcopal Church in Roanoke Rapids, where he faithfully served in numerous leadership and support roles over his 59 years of membership. He was always ready to lend a helping hand with church projects and activities, embodying a true spirit of service and dedication to the mission of All Saints'.
Scott had a deep affection for "The Promised Land," his farm in Spring Hill, where he found joy in riding his tractor and tending to the land. He also cherished his time on the front porch of the Ida Lawrence Cottage in Ocracoke, where he shared countless conversations about life, the universe, politics, and world affairs. As a licensed contractor, Scott designed and oversaw the construction of two homes, approaching each project with remarkable precision and care. A perfectionist in the best sense, he took great pride in craftsmanship and found beauty in every detail. Guided by an enduring intellectual curiosity, Scott was a lifelong learner who loved reading, exploring new ideas, and connecting with people from all walks of life.
Scott is survived by his children, Eddie Atkinson and wife Kim (Raleigh, NC), Jack Barber and wife Kelly (Roanoke Rapids, NC), Margaret Davidson and husband Jeff (Mount Lebanon, PA), and Mallory Scott Barber, Jr. and wife Julie (Carolina Beach, NC); grandchildren, Logan Atkinson, Byron Atkinson and wife Kara, Samuel Barber and wife Jaime, Em Barber, Carter Davidson, James Davidson, Harrison Barber and wife Carley, and Ethan Barber; great grandchildren, Asher and Lily Atkinson; sister Jen Esham (Ocracoke); Swiss family Nadja Hürlimann and husband Peter (Hünenburg, CH), and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will cherish his memory.
Visitation will be held at the Barber home at 103 Bayberry Court, Roanoke Rapids, NC on Friday, November 14, 2025 from
3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at All Saints' Episcopal Church on Saturday, November 15 at 11:00 AM with the Reverend Sonny Browne officiating. A brief reception will be held at All Saints' Parish House after the service and interment services will follow at Old Trinity Episcopal Church Cemetery in Scotland Neck. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to All Saints' Episcopal Church.
