Marcia McGahan Murphy, 91, of Osterville and Brockton, died peacefully on December 19th, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Waltham and later raising her family in Brockton, she was the daughter of the late Charles Brown McGahan and the late Margaret (Reno) McGahan.
Marcia devoted her life to caring for others. She graduated from Simmons College and the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing, becoming a registered nurse. After raising her children, she returned to the profession at Saint Joseph's Manor in Brockton and later served as a school nurse at the Raymond School and North Junior High School in Brockton, as well as in Harwich Public Schools. A nurse to her core, she brought compassion, competence, and calm to every patient and every setting. Never one to stop learning, Marcia earned her Masters in Education from Springfield College in her sixties, a program that included coursework at the University of Galway-an experience she cherished.
She was passionate about social causes and civic engagement, active in local politics and a proud member of the Brockton Democratic City Committee. Her commitment to community was matched only by her love of the simple joys of Cape Cod-especially fresh quahogs, lobster, and the rhythm of summer days by the water. She loved to laugh and to socialize, especially with her close-knit circle of friends who affectionately called themselves the "South Shore Supper Club."
Marcia met the love of her life, Paul, in a way that perfectly captured her warmth and humor: she had snuck some beer into a party, and when the supply ran out, she shared hers with Paul. That small act of generosity-and mischief-sparked a partnership that lasted 56 years. Together they built a life filled with laughter, loyalty, and a shared devotion to their family.
A lifelong Patriots fan, Marcia approached every season with optimism and every game with enthusiasm. She was endlessly social-someone who made friends effortlessly and left an impression everywhere she went. There was not a waiter she couldn't charm, nor a room she couldn't brighten.
Marcia was predeceased by her beloved husband Paul and their daughter, Sarah Brown Murphy. She leaves behind her children: Charles and his wife Sarah (Geary) Murphy of Hingham, MA; Emily (Murphy) Doyle and her husband Kevin Doyle of Santa Monica, CA; and Andrew and his wife Karen (Feury) Murphy of Rutherford, NJ. She was the proud grandmother of nine: Caitlin, Sean, and Elizabeth Murphy; Grace, John, and Claire Doyle; and Erin, Maeve, and Matthew Murphy.
Her family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Caring Hospice Services, Atria Woodbriar Park and Boston Medical Center for the exceptional care, compassion, and attention they provided in her final days.
A private ceremony will be held, with burial to follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery.
