It is with deep sadness that we share that Marcus Gary Strickland, age 77, of Ellabell, GA passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 after a long battle with Parkinson/Dementia. Gary was born on June 29, 1947 to Marcus “Doc” Strickland and Mildred Butler Strickland in Statesboro, GA.
He was preceded in death by his father Marcus “Doc” Strickland; mother, Mildred B. Strickland; brother, David Virgil “Buddy” Strickland and a very beloved sister-in-law, Michele Wilson Godley.
He graduated in 1965 from Bryan County High School and from there went on to work in the construction industry for over forty years. Gary was an avid sports fan, especially the Georgia Bulldogs an Nascar, which he enjoyed with his brother-in-law and best friend David. As far back as Gary could remember from his childhood, up to his golden years, he has spent part of the month of October n Maggie Valley, NC. He enjoyed the fall foliage and looked forward to seeing the changing of the colors every year.
Gary is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marolyn Wilson Strickland; nephew, Shawn Strickland (Summer); niece, Amy Llamas (Jack); sister-in-law’s, Sylvia Brandon (Skip), Faye Owens (David); brother-in-law, Paul Godley; two nephews, Matt Owens and Jonathan “JP” Godley (Ashley); two nieces, Ronica Cox (Keith) and Julie Boatright (Kevin) and several great nieces and nephews.
Gary was a member of Pembroke Methodist Church, but had been attending Olive Branch Baptist Church for years.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Flanders Powell Funeral Home.
Funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the Flanders Powell Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Scott Souther officiating.
Burial will be held at Northside Cemetery.
Contributions can be made in Gary's name to Hospice Savannah or to Olive Branch Baptist Church.
