Margaret Jean Appleget, 95, of rural Sigourney, passed away on November 10, 2024 at the Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney. Jean was born October 1, 1929 in Van Buren Township to Harris and Gertrude Stokesberry Barnhart.
Jean grew up in Sigourney area, attended country school and graduated in 1947 from Sigourney High School. On August 18, 1948 she married Dean Appleget at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, IA. She worked at the Keokuk County Auditor’s Office as a Deputy Auditor. As their farming operation became full time operation Jean helped her husband with the dairy herd, hog operation and the crops. Later in life she took a part time position as a tax preparer, working for Goeldner & Goeldner and also H& R Block for 28 years. She also did bookkeeping for a restaurant. She enjoyed these many years working with the public and being involved with math. Jean enjoyed reading, and doing volunteer work within her church and also with various non-profit organization. Jean was an active member of the Sigourney Christian Church. She had served as a Sunday school teacher, a member of the Christian Women’s Fellowship and served as a deaconess. The couple became parents of two children Donna and Steven.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dean on June 21, 2019, infant son Steven, step-mother Freda Stroud Barnhart, sister Ruth Barnhart, two brother and sister-in laws Dean and Audrey Barnhart, Dale and Helen Barnhart and brother-in-law Leroy Kracht.
She is survived by her daughter Donna Strand and her husband Bob of Geneva, IL. One grandson Eric Strand and wife Janis of Chicago, IL., two great-great grandchildren Dean and Jane Strand, one sister Luetta Kracht of Sigourney and brother Don (Delores) Barnhart of Sigourney and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held Thursday November 14, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. at the Sigourney Christian. Visitation will be Thursday 9:30 to 11:00 A.M. at the Christian Church. Burial will be at Pleasant Grove Cemetery near Sigourney.
A memorial fund has been established to the Sigourney Christian Church or Sigourney Fire and Rescue.
