Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cargain Funeral Homes Inc. - Mahopac from Oct. 21 to Oct. 22, 2025.
Margaret "Maggie" Gutierrez, a cherished matriarch and beacon of love and joy, passed away peacefully on October 19, 2025, at the age of 100, in Yorktown Nursing & Rehab, where she had been a resident for several months. She was born on February 24, 1925 in New Rochelle, NY to Michael and Marie Staus (Mauer). Maggie's life was a testament to the power of grace, resilience, and the enduring strength of family bonds.
She met the love of her life, Bill, on a blind date – a chance encounter that grew into an everlasting love and partnership. They were married on May 12, 1951, and settled in White Plains, starting their family, before moving to Eastchester. Their love endured for forty-eight wonderful years before his passing in 2000. She was also predeceased by her beloved daughter, Diane Heinzinger, in 1987, and is survived by her son-in-law, Jimmy (Pam), who still remained a valued part of her family. She was also predeceased by her companion, Ed Hembury, who was her partner for several years.
A devoted mother to her son, Kenny Gutierrez, and his wife, Gale, she was especially grateful for their loving support, care and assistance during her later years. She leaves behind a lasting legacy in the hearts of her cherished grandchildren, Jennifer (David) Cutting, Kenney (Jackie) Gutierrez, Matthew (KJ) Gutierrez, Rickey (Danielle) Gutierrez, who remember her lovingly and carry on the values she taught them over the years. Maggie's joy was multiplied when she became a great-grandmother to JT, Ally, Alaina, Derek, Nina and Gabriella, who brought her immeasurable happiness and pride. Her memory will also be held dear by all who knew her, including extended family, and her wonderful friends and neighbors.
After spending time as a devoted homemaker, Maggie returned to work as a bookkeeper for Dr. Herman Tarnower, famously known as the "'Scarsdale Diet Doctor." Her work ethic made her an invaluable asset to the team and left a lasting impression on all who worked alongside her.
Maggie's life revolved around those she loved the most - her family meant the world to her. Her passion for life was evident in her love of ballroom dancing, a hobby that kept her light on her feet and brought her much joy. She was an avid reader, who found solace and adventure within the pages of countless books, and her love for chocolate was a sweet indulgence that she never denied herself. Maggie's evenings were often spent as a dedicated fan of Jeopardy (she never missed an episode), where she would challenge her mind and cheer on the contestants from the comfort of her home. A lifelong lover of music, Maggie found great joy playing the piano. Whether playing for family gatherings or quietly at home, the music she shared remains a treasured memory for all who heard her play.
Maggie lived a century of love, learning and legacy. Her departure leaves behind a void that can never be filled, but her spirit will continue to guide and inspire her family and all who were blessed to know her. As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman, we take comfort in knowing that her journey was full of purpose, her life full of love and kindness, and her story one of unwavering devotion to those she held dear.
