Eleanor (Slattery) Cahill of Carmel, New York, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2025, at the age of 92. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a friend to many.
Eleanor was born on October 17, 1932, to William Slattery and Beatrice Gaughan. She grew up in the Bronx, New York, attending Sacred Heart High School. In 1953, she married the love of her life, Rudolph (Rudy) Lombardi at Holy Spirit Church, and together they raised their four children in the Bronx. Eleanor was an active member of her community and Our Lady of Angels Parish, where she coached softball and was a Girl Scout troop leader. She and Rudy also spent many memorable summers with their extended family in Highland Lakes, New Jersey. Eleanor and Rudy enjoyed 24 wonderful years of marriage, but their time together was cut short by Rudy's passing on January 20, 1978.
Eleanor later moved to Yonkers, New York. As her children got older, she began a career in bank management, holding positions at Dollar Savings Bank and Emigrant Savings Bank from 1970 to the mid-1990s. While working at the bank, she met her second husband, Richard Cahill. They were married in 1983 and moved to Carmel, New York, and they spent 18 years together that were filled with travel, family, and laughter. Richard passed away on August 5, 2001, preceding Eleanor's passing by exactly 24 years to the day.
Eleanor lived a full and active life, even in her later years, demonstrating her remarkable strength and resilience. She walked and took weekly swim classes with her friends at the YMCA, and she challenged herself at home with crossword and sudoku puzzles. She was an exceptional cook, and she always arrived for a visit with coolers full of her legendary meatballs, eggplant, and Irish soda bread to share with everyone. She loved to socialize and regularly called to check in on family and friends, and she was a parishioner at St. James the Apostle Church and participated in senior activities at the Carmel Friendship Center.
But above all, Eleanor's greatest joy was her family. Eleanor was a matriarch in every sense of the word. Family was the center of her life, and she was deeply devoted to her children and grandchildren. Her biggest source of pride was her family and their accomplishments, especially when it came to her grandchildren, whom she never missed an opportunity to brag about. Eleanor's happiest moments were those spent surrounded by her family, and she leaves behind a legacy of unconditional love and dedication. Her family will always be grateful for the many wonderful years they were able to share with her, and she will be deeply missed by all.
Eleanor is survived by her children, John (Kathy); Rosemarie (Tom); Jane (John); and Anthony (Christine); her grandchildren, Alyssa, Michelle, John, and Thomas; and her great-grandchild, Amelia. She is predeceased by her first husband, Rudy; her second husband, Richard; her grandson, Christopher; her brothers, James, Edward, and William; her sister, Rose; and her parents William and Beatrice.
