Margaret "Maggie" Powers, 78, passed away on March 17, 2025, in Hillsboro, Oregon.
Born on February 21, 1947, in Denham Springs, Louisiana, Maggie was a lifelong scholar and educator. She earned her Bachelor's degree from Louisiana State University before continuing her studies at Tulane University for her Master's degree. She later returned to LSU to complete her doctorate. Her passion for education led her to specialize in English as a Second Language (ESL), a field in which she made a profound impact. Throughout her career, she taught at several prestigious institutions across the country, including West Virginia University, Berkeley, the Monterey Institute, and Oregon State University.
Maggie's expertise and dedication extended beyond national borders-she was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to teach abroad in Italy and also spent time educating students in Prague. Her work touched countless lives, empowering students from diverse backgrounds to master the English language and achieve their goals.
Beyond her professional achievements, Maggie was known for her vibrant personality and many passions. She was a voracious reader who found joy in literature and learning. A talented singer and musician, she embraced music and the arts with enthusiasm. She also had a deep love for nature and animals, finding solace and inspiration in the world around her. Those who knew her remember her as smart, selfless, funny, dedicated, and loving-qualities that defined both her personal and professional life.
In 1969, Maggie married Steven Bravard; though their paths later diverged in 1990, their union brought forth a family that remained central to her heart throughout her life.
Maggie is survived by her sons, Steven Bravard and Christian Bravard. She was predeceased by her parents, William Powers and Margaret (Walker) Hopkins.
Maggie's legacy lives on through the many students she inspired, the music she shared, and the love she gave so freely. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew her.
