MARGARET MABLE ZAHLER
HOPKINTON- Margaret Mabel Zahler, 103, formerly of Hopkinton, peacefully passed away Friday morning, May 2, 2025, at United Helpers Rehabilitation and Senior Care in Canton.
Margaret was born on May 24, 1921, on Croil Island, Louisville, NY, daughter of the late Arthur and Mae (Harris) Vallance. She was a graduate of Massena High School and the Watertown School of Commerce. She married Erwin Ernest Zahler on September 5, 1943 at the Louisville Community Church. Erwin predeceased her on March 14, 2005.
She was a homemaker and took great pride in raising her family. She served as the Hopkinton Town Clerk for one term and was a very active member of the First Congregational Church in Hopkinton, where she belonged to the Women's Fellowship group and served as the treasurer for 30 years. Margaret also belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary of Hopkinton, the Ft. Jackson Fire Department, and was a charter and founding member of the Hopkinton Historical Group.
Along with her passion for caring for children Margaret was very active in anything and everything in her Hopkinton community. She was known for her green thumb and beautiful flower gardens. She enjoyed reading, crafting, sewing and walking and enjoyed volunteering at the library.
She is survived by her children Linda (Ricky) Maduro of Aruba; Terry (Aletha) Zahler of St. Regis Falls; Erwin (Linda) Zahler, Jr. of Potsdam; and Jeffrey (Barbara) Zahler of Winthrop; her granddaughter Marjorie (Jon) Meashaw who was raised by Margaret; along with 10 grandchildren, many great and great-great grandchildren.
Besides her parents Arthur and Mae, and her husband Erwin, she was also predeceased by her siblings seven sisters; Jessica, Pearl, Nora, Ruby, Maude, Ellen, Lois and four brothers; Charles, Victor, Arthur and Arnold. A son David (Alberta) Zahler, a grandson Christopher Phippen, a great grandson Nicholas Zahler and a great granddaughter Aubrey Lynn Zahler.
A Memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church in Hopkinton, on Thursday, May 15 at 11AM, with Rev, Richard Vaillancourt officiating. Burial will follow at the Hopkinton-Ft. Jackson Cemetery. The family has requested no flowers or perfume for those in attendance.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Margaret's memory to the First Congregational Church of Hopkinton.
