Margret E. Trayah "Maggie" July 24, 1956 – September 24, 2025 In Loving Memory of Maggie Trayah: A Life of Strength, Love, and Dedication
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Maggie Trayah, a remarkable woman whose life was a testament to resilience, love, and unwavering dedication. Maggie left this world on September 24, 2025, at the University of Vermont Medical Center, following a short yet courageous battle with a cancerous lung tumor. Her departure came just weeks after the loss of her beloved husband and soulmate of 42 years, Bob Trayah, on August 1, 2025. Their love story was one for the ages, and Maggie's heart, full of love and devotion, could not bear the weight of his absence.
Born and raised in Burlington, VT, Maggie was the cherished daughter of Melvin and Cecilia (Maynard) Relyea and the beloved sister to four older brothers-Henry, Richard, Michael, and David. A graduate of Burlington High School in 1974, Maggie pursued a career as a Licensed Nursing Assistant in 1977, dedicating her life to the care and well-being of others. Her career path led her to IBM and eventually to Homeland Security in St. Albans, VT, where she served with distinction for 26 years until her retirement in May 2025.
Maggie's heart was as vast as her accomplishments. Her greatest joy came from her involvement with the Vermont
Special Olympics, where she was a beacon of hope and inspiration. Her dedication earned her numerous commendations, including the prestigious Don Turner, Jr Award in 2015. Maggie's passion for coaching and mentoring extended beyond the field, as she embraced participants and their families as her own.
On July 16, 1983, Maggie married the love of her life, Robert "Bob" Trayah, and together they welcomed their cherished daughter, Mariah L. Trayah, three years later. Maggie and Bob shared a love for adventure, from exploring the beaches of Maine to raising wolf-hybrid dogs, a testament to Maggie's enduring spirit and love for nature.
Maggie's legacy lives on through her daughter, Mariah, who now carries the torch of her parents' love and strength. Maggie was predeceased by her parents, brothers Henry and Michael, and several other beloved family members. We find solace in imagining the joyous reunion they are having in the afterlife.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at UVMMC's Medical Intensive Care Unit, whose kindness and care provided comfort during Maggie's final days.
A celebration of Maggie's extraordinary life will be held at a later date. In honor of her memory, donations can be made to
The Special Olympics, 16 Gregory Drive, Suite 2,
South Burlington, VT 05403.
Maggie's life was a tapestry of love, strength, and selflessness. Her spirit will forever inspire those who knew her, and her legacy will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all she touched.
