Marguerite "Peg" McCafferty
Marguerite A. (McCue) McCafferty, 87, of Chelmsford died Nov. 8 at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of Matthew P. McCafferty Jr., with whom she would have celebrated her 70th wedding anniversary on Dec. 25.
Peg was born on Dec. 20, 1937 to the late Mary (Sheehan) and George McCue. She was educated in Lowell, where she attended Sacred Heart Elementary School and Saint Patrick's High School.
Peg will be remembered for her gentle spirit, unwavering faith and deep devotion to family, all values that she sought to instill in her children. She made all who knew her feel special with her engaging smile and ability to see the best in others.
At the age of 14, Peg was swept off her feet by Matt McCafferty and the couple married four years later on Christmas day before heading to Germany where Matt was stationed in the Army. They returned to Lowell two years later, where she raised her children, worked for a time at Scottie Shoe Company and was an active parishioner in the Sacred Heart Church and Holy Rosary Society. She was a gifted seamstress, including creating holiday outfits for her five young children, and later demonstrated her artistic talents by taking up painting as a pastime.
In her earlier years, Peg enjoyed road trips with her husband, square dancing, church activities and gatherings with family, especially during holidays and the annual McCafferty "Family Fest," which was a cherished tradition for many years. She was happiest when she was spending time with her large family of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was always proud to learn of their activities and accomplishments.
In addition to her husband, Peg is survived by three sons, Matthew III and his wife Patricia (Galvin) McCafferty of Andover, Daniel and his wife Pamela (Frediani) McCafferty of Chelmsford, and Dennis and his wife Mary Janet (O'Connor) McCafferty of York, Maine; two daughters, Donna and her husband Daniel Rogers Sr. of Lowell, and Susan and her husband Steven Normandin of Chelmsford; and her sister, Mary Johnson of Durham, NC; and sister-in-law Cecile McCue of Longs, SC.
She also was the beloved grandmother of Kathleen (Rogers) and her husband Jeffrey Melendez, Kristen (McCafferty) and her husband Eric Montplaisir, Daniel Rogers Jr., Steven and his wife Krista Normandin, Christopher and his wife Taylor Normandin, Matthew McCafferty IV, Kelley (Rogers) and her husband Stephen Trombly, Ashley (Normandin) and her husband Eli Gioumbakis, Kara Rogers, Meghan McCafferty, and John, James and Erin McCafferty; great-grandmother to Claire and Bennett Montplaisir; Colin, Julia and Everleigh Normandin; Grace, Eleanor and Margaret Trombly; and Yianni Gioumbakis and aunt to many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her brother George McCue and her sister Helen Perigny.
In addition to her family, Peg was fortunate to have the devoted care of Linda Easterday, Seng Mai, Naw Hsa Lar Wah and Diana Saunders.
