Maria Berthoud July 7, 1940 – August 1, 2025
Maria Berthoud, beloved mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2025, at the age of 85.
Maria was born on July 7, 1940, in Ukraine. She immigrated to the United States and made a life for herself in Chicago. On November 23, 1963, she married Robert Berthoud. Their love story was one of patience and persistence-Robert even proposed to Maria before she could fully understand English, which he later taught her himself.
A hardworking and determined woman, Maria became a proud small business owner, running her own cleaning service for many years. She also had a passion for cooking and was known for her incredible Ukrainian dishes, especially her homemade pierogi and kapusta. She passed down these cherished family recipes to her children and grandchildren, creating lasting memories around the kitchen table.
Maria loved to travel and, above all, treasured her time with family. She was a devoted grandmother who loved spending time with her grandchildren-taking them on little outings, teaching them how to garden, and always finding ways to make their time together special and fun.
Maria is survived by her children: John (Kathi) Berthoud, Wanda (Dave) Siiro, and Debbie (Jeff) Hanna; her grandchildren: Nicholas and Alexander Hanna, Amanda Siiro, and Gracie and Ethan Berthoud; her brother, Bill Demchuk; and her sister, Luba Kutschma.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Peter Demchuk.
Everyone, raise a glass and take a 'sipper' of Brandy for Maria.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 8, 2025, at the Justen Funeral Home, 3700 W. Charles Miller Road, McHenry from 9-11 am, with a service at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at Holy Apostle Cemetery, 5211 W. Bull Valley Road, McHenry, IL
