Salem – Marie Meegan 86, died unexpectedly on Wednesday morning, June 26th, 2024. She was the devoted wife of Salem patent attorney Owen Meegan, who died January 22nd 2009. Born in Waterbury Connecticut May 25th, 1938, the daughter of Raymond E. Paradis and Elizabeth A. Paradis (Butler).
Marie graduated from Crosby High School in Waterbury, CT, in 1956 and graduated from Anna Maria College in Paxton, MA in 1960. She also earned a master's degree from Southern Connecticut State College in 1965. She maintained strong ties with her various classmates, many of whom remained lifelong friends.
Soon after completing her studies, she began her career as a grade school art teacher, sharing her creativity and enthusiasm for art with countless children. After the Meegan family moved to Salem, MA in 1979, she served as both a grade school art teacher and a middle school special education teacher in the Salem Public Schools. Marie was also a proud member of the North Shore Art Teachers Association. She ended her career at Salem State University as an administrator for the art education master's degree program. She loved teaching and sharing her passion for art with her students and colleagues.
In retirement she enjoyed summers at her cottage in Maine, visiting art museums, attending the Boston Symphony, playing Scrabble with friends and participating in her condominium's book club. Central in her life was her devotion to Jesus Christ. Marie was a faithful parishioner at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Salem, where she could be found volunteering at the "Grandmother's Attic", assisting with collations and attending Rosary prayer groups with friends.
In the last month of her life, Marie traveled to both Maine and Washington D.C. to visit with her large extended family. In the following weeks, she enjoyed visits with her close friends and neighbors. Finally, on the last day of her life, we are told that she spent the day laughing with friends. Marie Meegan lived a full, happy, faith filled and independent life. Our family takes comfort in knowing that she was surrounded by family, friendship and love until the end. May God bless and keep her.
Marie is survived by her children Jeffrey Meegan and wife YuSze Meegan of Mercer Island, WA and their child Christine; Daniel Meegan and his wife Grace Meegan of Danvers, MA; Matthew Meegan of Boston, MA; Andrew Meegan and his wife Kristin Mielcarz-Meegan of Salem, MA and their children Amelia and Owen; Peter and his wife Gail Newcomb of Plymouth, MA and their children Ashley, John and Paige. She was devoted to her sister Jane O'Rourke and her late partner Winston Perry of Denmark, ME and nieces Malissa O'Rourke Miot and her fiancé Allen Ligon of Lancaster, MA; Suzanne Clisham and her husband Patrick Clisham, of Berlin, MA; Jocelyn Shane and her husband Teddy Shane of Naples, ME; as well as her sister in-law Carolyn Huard and her late husband Paul Huard of Rockville, MD, and nieces Jessica Huard of Seattle, WA; Noelle Huard Cofield and her husband Rossi Cofield, of Silver Spring, MD.
