Our beloved mother, Marilyn Jean Barkey, née Hogarth, age 93, exited her earthly home in Rootstown , OH, and entered her Heavenly home Sunday, July 13, 2025 following a three year journey with Dementia. Marilyn was proceeded in death by her loving husband of 71 years, Charles; her parents, Paul and Grace Hogarth; mother in law, Helen (Hermann) Heid, father in law, Jacob (Mildred) Barkey; brother, David, Robert and Richard; son, Steven (Cheryl); and special cousin, Jeanette Podnar. Marilyn is survived by her children, Michael (Cindy), Jeffrey (Marla) and Elisa Bechtel (William); sister, Natalie Eddy, brother, John (Julie) Hogarth; grandchildren, Dawn Barkey, Jason Barkey (Jessica), Stephanie Hewitt, Jordan Barkey, Matthew Bechtel (Tonya) and Emily Barkey; great-grandchildren: Nehemiah, Zacchaeus, and Genesis Bechtel; Abigail Barkey and Sophia Hewett; a host of cousins, nieces and nephews, and wonderful friends
Marilyn was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grand mother and great grandmother, and friend.
Marilyn was born Feb. 12, 1932, the eldest child of Paul and Grace Hogarth. She was born during The Great Depression and raised in a loving family with parents who had great senses of humor. Marilyn accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior at The Salvation Army Camp. Marilyn was a gifted pianist and organist, who shared her gift with the congregations of the churches she attended. Marilyn graduated from Akron's North High School in 1950. She graduated from Isabelle Firestone School of Nursing in 1953. Marilyn was a gifted nurse who worked for 33 years at Akron City Hospital. Marilyn dedicated her career to taking care of her patients with love, dignity and respect. Marilyn was the first camp nurse at Camp Carl, The Chapel's camp.
Marilyn and Charley were active in the churches they attended. They were members of The Chapel in Akron for 50 years. They treasured their friendships with their church family. Marilyn enjoyed gardening and had a beautiful rose garden for many years. Marilyn enjoyed many years of doing ceramics, initially with her mother and daughter, creating many beautiful treasures which she shared with many. She was an avid baker, creating delectable pies, brownies and her specialty, Blueberry Buckle.
Friends and family are welcome to come celebrate Marilyn's life on Saturday, August 2, 2025 with visitation at 10:00 and celebration of life service at 11:00 at the Hummel Funeral Home 3475 Copley Road, Copley, OH. In lieu of flowers, donations be made in Marilyn 's name to The Haven of Rest Ministries, Akron, OH.
