Marilyn Jean Kretsinger, age 84, of Denison, Texas, passed away peacefully at home after a long and courageous journey with Alzheimer's Disease - a battle she faced with quiet dignity and strength.
Born on October 13, 1940, in Sherman, Texas, to Charles Edward "Jack" and Virginia Kretsinger, Marilyn was a woman of deep intellect, curiosity, and compassion. She graduated second in her class from Denison High School in 1958 - a detail she told with a smile, always accompanied by a story about how she came up just shy of first.
She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Austin College in 1962, followed by a Master of Arts from the University of Wisconsin. Returning home to Grayson County, Marilyn began her first career teaching English at Grayson County College. Her passion for learning eventually led her to the University of Texas, where she earned her law degree in 1978 - marking the beginning of her second professional chapter.
Marilyn went on to serve for 25 years as Associate General Counsel at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., where she worked as a copyright attorney. After retiring, she returned once more to Grayson County to care for her beloved parents in their later years - a reflection of the deep love and loyalty that defined her life.
While Marilyn never married or had children of her own, she embraced the role of "Aunt Marilyn" with a full and loving heart. Her nieces and nephews were her joy - she shared adventures with them traveling around the world and welcomed them with open arms to her home in D.C. Her love of books was unmatched - She was a voracious reader, a fixture at the Sherman Library, a volunteer at the Pottsboro Library, and a proud collector of first editions copies.
Those who knew Marilyn will remember her as incredibly kind, generous, and fierce in her commitment to helping others. She gave without fanfare - her time, her wisdom, her resources -to causes both close to home and across the world.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Virginia Kretsinger; her sisters, Nelda Cooper, Karen Samuel, and Margaret Reynolds; her nephew, Mark Samuel; and her great-nephew, Hayden Graham.
Left to cherish her memory are her sister, LouAnn Booker of Sherman, Texas, along with many loving nieces and nephews, cousins, and treasured lifelong friends.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to those who cared for Marilyn in her final years with such tenderness and compassion.
In lieu of flowers or donations, please honor Marilyn's legacy by doing something kind for someone in need. A quiet act of generosity - just as she would have done.
Blessed be the name of the LORD

It was an idiosyncrasy of the congenial office of general counsel that the position called assistant general counsel that Marilyn held for so many years was the deputy position. She also served tirelessly, for some time simultaneously, as its acting general counsel, so she was consequential in leadership of legal work and initiatives of the U.S. Copyright Office and administrative oversight of its staff. I was lucky to work nearly a decade with Marilyn, who was thorough, unpretentious and fun while maintaining decorum and formality of public service and administrative law in the Library, and loyal and protective of us both personally and professionally. When things got a little crazy, as they sometimes could with deadlines, rulemakings, reports, testimony, legislation, inquiries, briefs and filings, she would make a quick funny face or small joke to make us laugh, or call out a funny line as she headed back to her office. She spoke often of her parents, and plans to return to Texas when she retired; there was never a doubt in her mind. I know she will be remembered always in our hearts.

We are deeply grateful for the difference Marilyn made to the Pottsboro Library. Her quiet generosity, sharp intellect, and lifelong love of books enriched our work and community in lasting ways. Marilyn believed in the power of libraries, and we are honored to have been part of her story. Her legacy will continue to inspire us.
