Marilyn Frances Pepe, retired waitress and lifelong resident of the South End died peacefully at the age of 88 on May 16, 2025.
The youngest daughter and fifth child of William and Margaret (Morrissey) Pepe, Marilyn was born and grew up on Adams Street in Springfield's South End until moving to Williams Street during her retirement years.
She was likely one of the oldest living Italian residents to be born and die without ever residing anywhere else. She never drove a car and so she walked everywhere in the neighborhood. Most importantly to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church where she was a communicant.
As part of the "Greatest Generation," she lived through both the Great Depression and World War II. Marilyn was a counter waitress for over 40 years at the Howard Johnson's on E. Columbus Ave. where she served untold numbers of people who came to know her as pleasantly sarcastic, extremely efficient and always ready with an upbeat greeting and a hot cup of coffee. People were always happy to sit at her counter and visit. Marilyn acquired many friends over the years and enjoyed a good laugh and the camaraderie of a great Italian meal.
Her family would like to extend their appreciation to Cori Chartier for her love and care for Marilyn. She is an angel on earth. In addition, they are grateful to all her friends who visited and cared for her during the last few months.
Marilyn leaves behind a niece, 3 nephews, and several greats.
Marilyn's Funeral Mass will be Tuesday, June 3rd, 10 a.m. at Mt. Carmel Church, burial to follow at St. Michael's Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Carmel Church.
