Obituary via Zettler Funeral Home
Mario E. de la Vega age 78, passed away peacefully at his home in Fayetteville, NC on
Thursday, June 20th, 2024. Born on October 20 th, 1945 in Havana, Cuba, he
immigrated to America in 1961 and attended Hughes High School, class of 1963. He
enlisted in the Army and served as an Infantry Sergeant in Germany from 1966 to 1968.
Mario graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1971 with a Bachelor's degree in
mathematics.
Mario was an active member of the local communities in which he lived, having coached
many soccer and baseball teams, was a member of the Fairfield Optimist Club and
attended Sacred Heart Church, where he was a charter member of the Knights of
Columbus, Father Roettele Council #8115. He had an infectious personality and never
met a stranger. His love for life was evident in everything he did and the pride he had
for his children and family was overflowing.
Survivors include his ex-wife and still friend Sandy de la Vega, their children Mario A.
"Tony" (Karen) de la Vega, Brian C. de la Vega, and Michelle L. (Alex Johns) de la Vega;
7 grandchildren, Allison, Lauren, Emily, Tyler, and Megan de la Vega, Matt (Jennifer)
Staskal and Hollie (Steven) Ankney; 2 great grandchildren, Grady and Maddie; 2 Nieces
Nancy (Mike) Shular and Deborah (Rocky) Tekulve, 3 Nephews, Bill and Ken de la Vega
and Jim (Rose) Courtney, and many great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father Guillermo de la Vega, his mother Maria
(Gonzalez) de la Vega, his brother William A. de la Vega and his nephew Jeff Courtney
Visitation will be from 2:00-4:00pm Sunday June 30, 2024 at Zettler Funeral Home,
2646 Pleasant Ave, Hamilton, OH 45015. Prayers offered at 9:30am Monday July 1,
2024 in the Zettler Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am
Monday July 1 st at Sacred Heart Church with Fr. Larry Tharp celebrant. Burial with
military honors will be in Arlington Memorial Gardens following Mass.
