Marjorie "Margie" VanVleet died peacefully on Friday, September 27, 2024 in her home in Hammondsport, NY.
Margie was born on November 2, 1948 in Endicott, NY to Ralph and Doris Manchester. She obtained degrees from Penn State and Alfred University. Margie's vast resume represents her impact on each community in which she resided. Some of her accomplishments include starting hospice services in the Southern Tier; serving as an adjunct professor at Elmira College; providing education as an instructor for the Choice Theory Institute; and serving as a school counselor at Horseheads High School, Corning West High School and at the High School Learning Center, which she helped create. Whatever Margie did, she did it with love, compassion, dedication and kindness to care for and support those with whom she worked.
Margie lived in multiple states, but some of her best stories and memories were created from her time living in Japan with her children where she served as a school counselor for the American School in Japan. Everywhere she lived, she enjoyed traveling and made friends wherever she went.
A devout Catholic her entire life, Margie truly lived and embraced Jesus' teachings of love, compassion, mercy, humility, peace and righteousness.
Margie is survived by her loving husband of 33 years, Gordon "Gordy" VanVleet; children, Bill, Tracy and David Ingram; grandchildren, Brooke, Brice and Destiny; great-granddaughter, Luna; brothers: John Manchester, Paul (Wendy) Manchester, Gary (Cathy) Manchester; sister, Karen (John) Lesky; and too many friends to name!
A Celebration of Life will be held in May 2025. If you would like information once plans are finalized, please send an email to [email protected].
In lieu of flowers, a GoFundMe has been established to help cover funeral costs: https://gofund.me/b7f9ab3a.
Margie's family has entrusted her care to Haughey Funeral Home, Inc.
