Marjory "Marge" Sichert, 95, of Franklin, IN, Tryon, NC, Vero Beach, FL, and Burtonsville, MD, passed away on February 5, 2024. She was born to James Marvel & Helen Caroline (Morton) Edney in Tryon, NC on March 8, 1928. Marge was born in the beautiful southwest corner of North Carolina in the mountainous village of Tryon. The second oldest of ten children, she was no stranger to helping with family responsibilities growing up. Marge graduated from Tryon High School in 1945 and decided to pursue a career in nursing. She moved to Washington, DC and attended nursing school at Sibley Memorial Hospital, earning her RN certificate in November 1950.
While in nursing school, Marge met John Edward Sichert whom she married in 1951. She briefly went back to work as a nurse part-time after her two children were older, but then dedicated most of her time to managing her husband's successful mechanical engraving business. Marge kept the books, handled payroll, and picked up/delivered work. This was in addition to homemaker and child raising tasks.
In the 60s and 70s Marge enjoyed weekend trips to Ocean City, a growing resort city on Maryland's eastern shore. You could find her and her daughter on the beach, walking the boardwalk, or eating Dayton's fried chicken wings on any given weekend. She loved to travel, jumping at opportunities to go across the country on road trips, or to Florida when the kids were on school breaks.
In late 1979, John and Marge sold the house and business in suburban Maryland (Burtonsville), and moved to Florida, eventually settling in Vero Beach. The winter of 1978-79 had been particularly bad, so Marge decided that would be her last winter in a cold climate (or so the story goes).
Marge enjoyed tennis, playing doubles in her 70s, and loved going to various tournaments in the area. She could tell you a lot about her favorite players. Marge also had a lifelong love of music and was a big Elvis fan. She attended concerts by several country artists over the years, including Marty Stuart, Randy Travis, Alan Jackson, and Tanya Tucker.
Marge and John enjoyed the warmth of the Floridian lifestyle for the next 20 years, but in 2002 moved to Indianapolis where their daughter lived so she could help them as they grew older.
Marge's husband passed away in early 2015. Her health deteriorated slowly over subsequent years. She suffered 3 major falls, breaking her hand after the first, then one hip and later the other hip. She was also diagnosed with vascular dementia, and so her days of being able to live at home came to an end by 2016.
Marge lived at several facilities, including Magnolia Springs, Southpointe Healthcare, and most recently Greenwood Meadows. The family would like to thank all of her caregivers during this last stage of her life. We are also appreciative of Anew Hospice who cared for her since 2022.
Preceded in death by her parents, her husband John E. Sichert, sisters Joyce Huntley, Doris Lehoskay, Mary Lee Lindsey and brother James Edney.
Survived by her children; Nancy Lynn Sichert of Indianapolis, IN & John William Sichert of Fairfield, PA, sisters Shirley Harris, Bonnie Pendleton of Sebastian, FL, brothers Carl Edney, Carroll ("Boonie") Edney and Douglas Edney of Tryon, NC, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Home, 481 W. Main St., Greenwood, IN from 10:30am to 12:00 pm. A funeral will immediately follow the visitation. Burial will take place at Franklin Greenlawn Cemetery.
