Mark Deeds Obituary

Mark Reed Deeds
November 24, 1948 - June 3, 2024
Mark Reed Deeds, born in Dallas on November 24, 1948, died peacefully surrounded by family on June 3, 2024.
Mark graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Dallas in 1967 before completing a Fine Arts degree from Texas Tech in 1973. From there, he moved to San Antonio and worked in many creative roles in the printing industry, eventually leading sales in Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio for Padgett Printing. While in San Antonio he became known as an avid collector, good neighbor, and overall eclectic creator. Mark met his wife Ann in 1990 and the two together continued to build their home and community, welcoming two children and re-establishing the Terrell Heights Neighborhood Association. Later in life, Mark used his creative talents as a handyman - his unique decks, fences, arbors, and gates can be seen on many San Antonio homes. In his retirement and throughout his life, Mark was often found enjoying breakfast tacos, an iced tea, and a football game.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents; Joe Allen Deeds and JoAnn Reed Deeds, and brother Gary Allen Deeds. He is survived by his caring wife of 33 years Ann Stapleton Deeds, and their two children, Zachary Allen and wife Hannah, and Erin Elizabeth.
Thanks to his amazing wife and their compassionate friends, Mark's battle with the final stages of Alzheimer's was short and graceful. Always a forward thinker, Mark chose to donate his brain to the Biggs Institute. Please consider a donation there in lieu of flowers.
Mark will be honored at 1pm Saturday, June 8 at Sunset Ridge Church of Christ, just a block from his home of 40 years, where friends of the family are invited to join us for a celebration of his life.

I was so sorry to hear of Mark's passing. I shared with my mother ( who lives out of state) and she asked that I share her condolences for "such a wonderful, helpful caring man". ( one guess as to who helped her when she was visiting us and got locked out of our house while we were away).
When I think of Mark I remember all the mornings he walked to pur neighbor Coda's house and picked up her paper and walked it up to the door for her. I can see his dog Jack running around in gleeful circles. I can see Mark smiling and wishing me good morning. I enjoyed our chats before I got into my car and drove to work...when I was running late I was a little disappointed I missed this ritual. The stairs in our bathroom? Mark fixed those ...our neighbor's beautiful front gate with the cut out metal design? Mark built that. I told my kids when they were younger , if for any reason there's some odd situation and were not here and you have a problem go to the Deeds on the corner ( or next door to Ms. Jen). He never drove by without waving hello. Houses can stand in a row but kind? Intelligent , friendly neighbors like Mark and Ann make it a community.

Always the generous neighbor, Mark never hesitated to volunteer a hand with a home project or to give me handyman advice. We loaned each other tools over the many years as neighbors, enjoyed a few meals with families and holiday celebrations in the Deed's yard. Mark was a great example of what a good neighbor is, and our neighborhood will be a bit less without him.

My first memory of Mark was the day we moved into our house which is across the street from the Deeds. It was pouring down rain, Mark ran across the street and helped us get the final boxes inside out of all the rain. We were so grateful, and it was a very good welcome to the neighborhood. Mark will be missed dearly.
