Mark Richard Galbraith
12/10/1960-11/17/2025
Mark Richard Galbraith was born in December 1960 in St. Paul, Minnesota, one of four siblings adopted by Richard and Marjean Galbraith. Raised in Edina, he spent summers at the family cabin on Lake Alexander, where many of his favorite childhood memories-and misadventures-were made.
Mark graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1983 and later moved to Ann Arbor, where he met and married Miriam Allis. After earning his J.D. from George Mason University in 1992, they settled in Reston, Virginia, and raised their three children: Brendan, Nathaniel, and Christina. Mark practiced law for more than two decades before transitioning to commercial truck driving in 2015.
A devout Catholic, Mark carried a deep and steady faith that shaped his life and fatherhood. He found comfort in the Sacraments and often spoke of God's grace as a guiding light, a spiritual strength his family will always remember. Throughout his life, Mark embraced many passions that reflected his energetic and curious spirit. He grew up singing in the church choir and playing hockey, later finding joy in playing guitar, photography, cycling, golf, and walking his dog. He never knew a stranger and loved long phone conversations, yet he was just as content in quiet moments, especially on his motorcycle. Of all his experiences, Mark treasured fatherhood most. He shared his interests with his children, encouraged their curiosity and resilience, and presided over lively family dinners filled with stories, lessons, and laughter. Becoming a grandfather to Alexander in November 2024 was one of his greatest joys.
In August 2025, Mark was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. He faced his illness with determination, positivity, and faith, sending daily messages to his family that began, "This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it."
Mark was preceded in death by his father, Richard, and his sister, Deborah. He is survived by his mother, Marjean; siblings Christine and Kevin; his wife, Miriam; his children; and his grandson. A wake will be held at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments in Chesapeake, VA, on Sunday, November 30th at 5 p.m., followed by a funeral Mass at St. Benedict's Catholic Church on Monday, December 1st at 11 a.m., with burial to follow.
Cards and condolences can be sent to 503 McCosh Drive, Chesapeake VA, 23320. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made in Mark's memory to Hope 4 Life at Hope 4 Life Helping Moms and Families with Unplanned Pregnancies.
