Marlys Rae Sampson, 72, of Roland, Iowa, passed away at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames on Sunday, October 27, 2024. She was born on April 24, 1952, in Marshall, Minnesota, the daughter of Lester and Neva (Toft) Kathman. She was a graduate of Boone High School. On February 9, 1973, Marlys married Larry Eugene Sampson. She worked for Iowa State University for over 27 years, retiring in June 2021.
Marlys enjoyed hiking, gardening, mowing their big yard, with her husband's help, and spending time with family. For over 50 years she was always right by Larry's side, helping him with trucking and farming.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Neva Kathman; brothers, Mike Kathman, Delbert Kathman, and Marlo Kathman; step-brothers, Bill Kathman and Roger Kathman; and step-sister, Ruth Hansen.
Marlys is survived by her husband, Larry Sampson; son, Jeremy (Amber) Richards, and their children: Karissa, Chelsi, Dakota, and Brayden; niece and God Daughter, Kaylene (Cory) Bingham, and their children: Kyler, Jordan, and Hailee; twin sister, Arlys (Eric) Udelhoven; sister, Val Williams; sister, LouAnn Doyle; brother, Randy (Bev) Kathman; step-brother, Jerry Kathman; in-laws: Faye Sampson, Nancy (Jeff) Fouts, and Keith (Lin) Sampson; as well as multiple nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home in Boone. Interment will be at Bass Point Cemetery following the funeral service. Visitation with the family present to greet friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 4, 2024, at Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the family and can be sent to C/O Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home, P.O. Box 116, Boone, Iowa 50036.
