Marshall Conklin Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ely Funeral Home - Neptune on Jan. 13, 2022.
Marshall Dulin Conklin passed away on January 7, 2022, at the age of 87. He was born at Fitkin Hospital in Neptune on November 19, 1934, to the late Stanley E. and Mary E. Conklin of Wanamassa.
He graduated from Asbury Park High School in 1953 where he played varsity football.
Marshall decided to join the United States Marine Corp after high school since the Korean War was still on going. So, in 1953 he headed for Parris Island to obtain an education which he would use for the rest of his life. He attained the rank of Sergeant and honorably served three years of active duty, and five years with the United States Marine Corp Reserves.
Marshall understood the value of an education, so following active duty in the United States Marine Corp he enrolled at Monmouth College using his GI Bill and eventually graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.
His first professional job was working for the Office of the New Jersey State Auditor which helped him gain the skills needed at his next job where he excelled for 32 years as the Board Secretary and School Business Administrator for the Township of Ocean School District.
Marshall was a pillar of the community and was a life member of the Wanamassa Fire and First Aid Squad, being an active member since 1959. He served in any capacity which was needed. Over the years he would eventually serve as the Fire Chief, President of both the Fire Company and the First Aid, as a member of the Finance Committee and on the Relief Association.
In retirement, when most people are taking it easy, Marshall was working hard for another 8 years for the New Jersey State Fireman's Home as the Chairman of the Finance Committee and as the Monmouth County Representative on the Board of Managers.
For his many years of dedicated service to the community, Marshall was awarded the honor of having a street named after him. Marshall Conklin Lane is located in Wanamassa at the entrance to the William F. Larkin Golf Course.
From the time that Marshall was a small boy, he loved to fish. Any chance he could get, he would be fishing at a lake, on a Jetty or in his boat on the open seas. He was a life member of the Shark River Beach & Yacht Club where he had many wonderful friends. He was the Chairman of the Membership Committee for several years, and you could often find him swinging a hammer at the docks.
Marshall was a deeply religious man and always sought the truth so that it would set him free. Over his lifetime he worshipped at many different churches and always made it a point to join the Choir wherever he was for he loved to sing. Whenever he could, he tried to attend two services on every Sunday at Holy Innocents in Neptune.
As a Veteran, Marshall answered the call to assist with fellow Veteran's needs. He was a member of the American Legion Post 346 where he never passed up an opportunity to recruit new members into the organization. He also, did his part by volunteering his time on the Neptune Township Veterans Committee.
Marshall is predeceased by his wife Sandra, and his brother Jay. He is survived by his three children: Mary Hardy and Scott M. Conklin of New Jersey, Kelly & her husband Jim Keane of California, and five grandchildren: Nik, Ellen, Lauren, Erik, and Brian.
Both Marshal and Sandra will be laid to rest together on April 8, 2022, at BG William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, New Jersey. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the Jersey Shore Rescue Mission in Asbury Park (www.jerseyshorerescue.org) or a charity of your choice.

January 19, 2022

Our sincere sympathies to family and friends. We met Marshall at SRBYC and quickly realized what a kind, humble man he was. He was always pleasant, never had a negative comment, was faithful, and kind. We would always look for him sitting outside as we´d pass his "BEACH HOUSE" along the river. May he rest in peace...and May happy memories make those who were lucky enough to know him, smile
RIP Marshall
